    ^ No prob.

But yeah, they have Never There, The Distance, Frank Sinatra, their new single Sick of You and a couple others. Not to mention they're pretty awesome outside their bigger hits.

And, my lord, I haven't heard Come On Eileen in YEARS. Thanks for that, FieryKane! Now, keep them coming!
8/9/11 (Def Leppard) will be marked as the best day in RB history for me. HMX, major thanks for all this amazing DLC you put out!

I was going to join in but I think I don't know what a one hit wonder it either! Actually it's interesting to see differences in music between the US and the UK.

A-Ha, Fine Young Cannibals, Dexies, Daniel Powter and Frankie were all no where near 1 hit wonders here in blighty!

I'd define it by general chart climbing. In theory, Dream Theater is a 1 hit wonder, but that never stopped them. They Even Elude to it in their "Greatest Hit and other songs you might like" album.

Songs that make a band: Basically One-Hit Wonders

    1. "Take On Me" - A-Ha
    2. "867-5309/Jenny" - Tommy Tutone
    3. "Tubthumping" - Chumbawamba
    4. "She Blinded Me With Science" - Thomas Dolby
    5. "Toy Soldiers" - Martika
    6. "She Drives Me Crazy" - Fine Young Cannibals
    7. "Come On Eileen" - Dexys Midnight Runners
    8. "My Sharona" - The Knack
    9. "Bad Day" - Daniel Powter

Well the Guiness of British Hits defines it as - "An artist who has had a number 1 single and no other entries in the charts (some 200 places) ever". Reading the Wikipedia entry sheds some light on the subject - "A single US top 40 entry and no other entry in the top 40 ever".

Fair do's, the US rules then...

I disagree with The Verve being on here. "Bittersweet Symphony" might be their most popular song, but 1) the album it came from had other hits as well (see "Lucky Man"); and 2) their earlier albums easily trump Urban Hymns in terms of quality.

Hell, I'd disagree with it and I put it there!

According to wikipedia (the fountain of all miss-knowledge) it's The Verve's only top 40 hit (number 12) in the US, so it qualifies. Apparently Lucky Man hit number 16 on the US 'modern rock chart'. Here in the UK both the Verve and Richard Ashcroft have had a string of extremely good hits.

Not even close (we should take this fight elsewhere, lol). Urban Hymns, at least for me, was the definitive album of the 90's. And Velvet Morning remains one the greatest songs ever written. Also Richard Ashcroft solo work trumps all the pre-Urban Hymns stuff with ease.

Wiki doesn't even count as a credible source, sorry. "One hit" wonder denotes a band that gains a grossly disproportionate amount of notoriety via one song....and I dont think one could characterize the Verve in such a manner. You saying that the Verve "have had a string of extremely good hits" serves to verify that notion.

As for Urban Hymns, it's all subjective obviously, but the Verve (or just Verve if you will) were at their best with their shoegaze oriented work, i.e their self titled EP and A Storm in Heaven. A lot of posters here would agree with me on that point. Not saying Urban Hymns is a bad album, but color me disappointed that they departed from their earlier sound.

you're right, we should take this somewhere else

I HATE putting this on there because I own every one of their albums, and they are all great IMO. The band just got screwed by their label which was changing just as they were gaining popularity and they fell off the face of the earth. It's unfortunate and I recommend people check them out. If you don't know about them, they are basically a 2-piece outfit (drummer and guitarist/bassist/singer in one).
