To me the song is about a middle aged man in denial that his marriage is failing.

To me the song is about a middle aged man in denial that his marriage is failing.

It never struck me that he was in denial, more that he was coming to terms with his life and then figuring, screw it. "You're the joke of the neighborhood," but, "why should you care if you're feeling good?" Life's becoming a catastrophe? Well, apparently it has to be. Strife builds character, and all that. So what are we gonna do about it? Eh, enjoy what's left of the ride. Take the long way home.
