Hopefully this gets fixed soon =/
The technical part of this problem is three lines of code or so. Rock Band and Guitar Hero most likely uses the hid device id to see what controller is connected, and maps buttons from that id. I've done this myself and it's no problem at all.
If Harmonix originally had implemented button configuration there really wouldn't be a problem at all, but as a side note, Activision has no case here what so ever. It's hardly even reverse engineering, as you don't need to do much of anything to see the button mapping. Plug the guitar to your PC and you're done.
Does Activision have a patent on the guitars because with their demands it sounds like they do.
They can't patent button layout. This is a **** throwing competition and consumers are losing. Why exactly Harmonix just didn't release it I don't know, I have a feeling Sony havn't told us everything from their side either.
This is such a small issue technically, I'm very surprised how big a case it has become. Let GH3 patch in RB compatibility and opposite. Throw in some ps2 guitars too maybe.
Well someone had to come up with the idea of a guitar-shaped controller, and yes they can patent it. Anything can be patented, but I guess nobody "owns" the instrument-shaped controller concept...which just adds onto the WTF Activision?!
Blocking the support of the Les Paul for the PS3 is a pretty lame move. I mean the only way to get a second guitar for Rock Band now is find someone else with Rock Band(and working guitar) or buy a second pack. I would think Activision would accept this patch since it would increase sales of GH3 for the PS3.
However, whats bothering me is why the Rock Band guitar is not compatible with GH2 for the 360. Harmonix developed GH2, so why hasn't a patch been made for it?
All I know is that I was thinking about selling my Wii GH3 and getting GH3 for PS3. But now I'll just wait for the extra Harmonix guitar and will most likely not bother buying any more GH products, including a second guitar for my Wii (or PS3 if I had gone that route).
So in the end, Activision has basically turned me off of GH, as I'm sure it has others. Rock band is a more than adequate replacement to GH, so I am more than willing to wait for my second Harmonix guitar. If they could manage to step up production of those and get them on the shelves sooner, it will just hurt Activision that much more.
It's a shame really as I was considering getting GH Rock the 80s or whatever for PS3 as well, but I won't bother if I have to have 4 guitars lying around.
I could understand Activision blocking Harmonix guitars being compatible with GH, they lose money on peripheral sales. But blocking GH guitars being used with Rock Band is just stupid.
And if there isn't some patent or real ownership issue, the real company we should be pissed at is Sony. They are the one's holding the patch. If there is no case for Activision, then Sony's just being their ***** on this...
I bought GH3 on the Wii (didn't have a PS3 back then), but had considered shelling out for a PS3 copy of the game also to use the Les Paul with Rock Band.
I'd hoped Activision would've reversed their decision by now, especially what with Christmas around the corner, but it looks like they're more than willing to give us all the finger during the festive season.
And if that happens, I'll never buy another of their products again. Ever.
If the patch isn't released by Christmas, I won't really care after that. It's for Christmas and Boxing Day that I'd like to have the 4 player thing going, as that's when everyone in my extended family is getting together.
After the holidays, I might just as well wait until the RB peripherals come out at the end of January.
At which point, Activision will always be a dead company to me.
