I think you can just blame Microsoft who probably just handed them a huge check and told them to just go out there for a couple minutes and wave.

Yeah, I remember watching that. They seemed like jackasses. xD
You'd kind of expect some kind of actual speech or something, but hey, whatever. They're the Beatles. They've been through all these conferences and crap for the past 40 years. I wouldn't expect much from someone who has to deal with a fan base at their knees every second of every day. xD
To me, it's just the same as the conferences they did with the band only withouth George's humor and John's witty remarks. A couple of guys who never really liked it and therefore did it their way.
Besides, Paul and Ringo are both in the latter half of their sixties. You can't expect them to tell much about a game that would have had to be said at that conference.
It was definitely a bit awkward, but Paul and Ringo just aren't big videogamers. Can't expect them to deliver a game conference speech like you would a Peter Molyneux or somebody involved in the industry. I just thought it was cool that they showed up at all.

The were on a drug known as "being old".
Remember zeppelin1969!
The comments make it pretty clear that they never actually played the game.
So having them comment on the game did seem kind of lame. It's like when an actor talks about a movie they were in, but never watched in entirety.

I'm pretty sure Ringo said "...and we were great", which would make quite a difference.
