Seems pretty self explanatory. It's important to note that some borderline performers, such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, were left out simply because they belong more in the "soul" category than funk.

I know they were pretty much the same band, as they were taken from the same pool of people, but I figured it would kind of be like saying "Who's the best indie artist?" and having everyone from Elephant 6 be considered one choice.

You missed the Meters! Other than that I would add Galactic and Orgone for great new funk bands.
I don't really have a favorite funk artist. I like listening to different styles of funk depending on what I'm feeling.
