I believe this is HMX reaching out...to all of us, Hey we know you love the game but we do not have the man power to chart all of these songs coming at us!
If you like money like we do, get someone to chart your songs.
Or I could be wrong?

Regarding your Power Rangers comment, an "underground" punk band has recorded a faithful cover of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Band's name id Alakrity.
Can't do covers. That's one of the RBN rules. Also, I contacted Aaron Waters, the original creator of the MMPR theme some time ago. He doesn't own any rights to the songs. At the time it was owned by Bandai, which has since been bought by Disney. So the MMPR song belongs to Disney.

I consider myself a mainstream guy, where most of the music I listened to I heard off of the radio or from my siblings and friends, who also listened to music from the radio and movies mainly. I didn't grow up in a household or situation where underground and "off the beaten path" groups were common. This has changed, as I don't listen to the radio anymore, and most of my music I get off of Youtube videos, suggestions from Napster/Pandora, RB/GH games and various internet forums, or from movie soundtracks. But there was a time where I didn't know a lot of these groups in these games.
For the sake of recording it, here's a list of RB 2 disc bands I didn't know prior to RB and RB2:
The Main Drag
The Replacements
Mastadon
Speck
Squeeze (only finding out later I knew them from 'Tempted')
Lush
Dinosaur Jr.
Anarchy Club
The Muffs
Silversun Pickups
Dream Theater
Interpol
L7
Bikini Kill
That Handsome Devil
Breaking Wheel
Testament
Norman Greenbaum (only recognized the opening rift)
The Sterns
Sonic Youth
Paramore
Abnormality
Libyans
23 bands out of the 84 songs. Add the free 20 to that, of which I had heard zero bands, and you have 43 of 104 songs. Out of these 43 bands, I'd say there are a good 20 I've either purchased songs or CDs from in the last couple years.
So as you can see, I've been fairly sheltered in my prior years, but I am 500% excited for RBN to launch so I can explore even more great music that I'm not regularly exposed to. As much as I'd love all my popular favorites to make it (80s hair bands and euro symphonic rock to name a few), I'm equally stoked to find bands I've never heard of with songs that rock just as hard.
I suppose my point is: Take heart that not every mainstream listener is going to feel the OP's way about RBN.
PS: And about the Evile comments, I had negative zero clue about that band prior to Rock Band. While I'm not a fan of their music now I at least have heard of them because of RB.
5+ years, 4,000+ songs, 1 awesome developer. Thank you!
CJHobbes: A lot of those bands are made up of Harmonix employees. So it would be understandable that you didn't hear of those bands before playing Rock Band or the first 2 Guitar Hero games.
