I think it's probably something that a certain type of person experiences. I'll bet you have a puzzle-solving kind of mind. When we sleep, our mind "defrags" itself - assimilating the experiences of the day, rectifying perception and applying what we've done to learning. In an alpha state (the relaxed, pre-sleep condition), the mind is very susceptible to learning. It could simply be that your mind is playing the game long after you've turned off the TV.

The first unofficial Limozeen comic (in 4 pages)
It's far worse with the GH 1-4 games because of the fretboards. I hate GH Vision.
The first couple of hours I spent with TB:RB it felt like a combination of Super Mario Galaxy with Tic Tacs.

Only time it happened to me was after I played the Endless Setlist on RB2. I have gotten the "stationary object that appears to be rising" thing before, but ESL2 was the only time I had the fretboard after-image.

I use to get the "highway after effect" when I first got RB2 I guess I have played it so much I have gotten use to it. I can't remember the last time I was still seeing the note highway.
Used to happen to me for RB1, also for GTA3, i'd close my eyes and see the wanted level stars, hahaha
My Morning Jacket for DLC
more The Band, Yeah Yeah Yeahs & FLAMING LIPS
It used to happen to me back in the GH1 days. Its crazy at first but you get use to it. I also still till this day at times can see the board or notes moving if I close my eyes, but I also did a lot of acid as a kid so to a point I think its cool!
