In both quickplay and story mode, if I select to play the local option, it tries to connect to the wi fi. It sits there trying for a few minutes, then gives me an error code (I haven't set up the wi fi) and asks me if I want to continue anyway.
Anyone seen this? Is there anything I can do?

Select "Local" but Wii wants to go Wi-FI

Local means playing with local players. Its trying to go online to upload your scores to the leaderboards. Go to Options, Player Settings and disable online play to stop it trying to connect.

Disable your internet settings in the Options screen. That should do it.
