Speed, Death, Thrash, and Power metal tend to be my favorites. Death metal generally over all but Im currently on a speed metal kick. Not just Cacophony or Judas Priest but a lot of great 80s stuff.

as much as i've been digging doom and death, prog metal is still my favorite
Thrash or Prog.

I still say that sludge is no more a metal genre than grindcore. Sludge has huge influences from hardcore. Just listen to Crowbar, War Pigs, or Kylesa and the hardcore influences are obvious. Sludge is a crossover genre, just like grindcore, metalcore, crossover thrash, or industrial metal. And doom definitely deserves a spot before sludge (especially given that most who lump sludge into metal consider it a variant form of doom).
Recently black metal has been my favorite. But I voted thrash for it's lasting power, as it's always somewhere in my listening habits. Death also warranted some heavy consideration, given my love for Swedeath, old school death, and true melodeath. Any forms of metal with obvious hardcore influences also gets me going, so sludge (despite my protests) ranks very highly as well.

I'd hardly say that melodic melodeath and deathcore have obvious hardcore influences. Their blending takes hardcore features and merges them in, but they don't present them in the same fashion as hardcore music. Sludge, crossover, true metalcore, grindcore, the black metal/punk hybrid stuff, and other similar material on the other hand...

I like symphonic symphonic metal. What are you calling that?
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.
