I'm not underestimating the OP, just trying to combat the musical ignorance at his school from afar.

New albums from Alexisonfire, Billy Talent, Dinosaur Jr, Dream Theater, Jay-Z, Megadeth, Muse, Porcupine Tree and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I'm giving OP what he wants rather than argue about it.

i asked 20 people today if they knew the 8 pretty popular artists (aic, muse, wilco, sonic youth, sspu, arctic monkeys, megadeth, billy talent.) on my list of choices. of the 20:
3 people knew the name aic, 3 knew the name muse...
2 knew the name billy talent, 2 knew the name arctic monkeys...
1 knew the name megadeth. the rest of the bands were unknown to anyone.

of the people who responded positively, no one could name a song by aic, one person could name a song by muse (though he's an avid fan,) one could name only 1 billy talent song, no one could name an arctic monkeys song, and no one could name a song by megadeth. i know 5 of them personally and they do listen to music alot (one wears a band shirt to school daily.) maybe this will show you just how ignorant my school is.

@Evilbottom: thanks for being one of the few to give me what i asked instead of try to explain how our schools are corrupt.

The new AiC album is the only mainstream release that I found to be even remotely tolerable this year, so definitely use that. You could use the new Weezer album, terrible as it may be. I'd suggest to use the new Bob Dylan album Together Through Life, but I somehow doubt those sort of people would even know the name, let alone recognize his music.

Here's a list of really mainstream stuff you could review though:
Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
    Pearl Jam - Backspacer
    Weezer - Raditude
    Paramore - Brand New Eyes
Billy Talent - Billy Talent III
U2 - No Line On The Horizon
Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown
    Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony
Three Day's Grace - Life Starts Now
    Chickenfoot - Chickenfoot

I feel as though I've basically compiled a list of albums I'd never even consider listening to, but there you go. Also, the new Flyleaf album is out next week so you could use that as well. I think it's called Memento Mori.

If reissues count, you could review Radiohead's Kid A or The Stone Roses' self titled album.

It's good to be happy. There's no hope.

didn't think of backspacer. most know pearl jam so that may work.
i was actually thinking of doing dylan, but he really bores me if listened to for an extended period of time.

if it wasn't for guitar hero 3, no one would know slayer. if they don't know megadeth, i doubt anyone would recognize that name.
