Whoa, pump the brakes dude. It's in the docs, but I agree that you have to try it before you can "get it".
Basically, you want to find the start of each measure which is made easier by using the tab key to "go to next transient" on (usually) the kick track.
Then at the start of each measure, you press the Q key in order to add a tempo item at that point. This keeps the tempo of your midi locked onto the tempo of your song, measure by measure.
