I'd never heard of it, so I went to YouTube, and it just sounds like a bunch of Beach Boys rip-offs.

True, they pretty much just ripped off of Pet Sounds and Zappa's Freak Out!

Amazing album, I get goosebumps by the Reprise which goes into overdrive in A Day in the Life.

Eh, I think there is a fine line between taking influence from and ripping off. Pet Sounds was highly influenced by Rubber Soul, though only really in the way that the LP should be viewed as a valid format instead of just songs built around a hit single. Musically, I've never found Sgt Peppers and Pet Sounds comparable, unless use of vocal harmonies and "LOTS AND LOTS OF INSTRUMENTS" count.

As for Freak Out!, I see very little similarities between the two albums, honestly, other than the "concept album" idea, something that is pretty thin in both albums (especially Sgt Peppers). I do rage a bit everytime I see claims that Sgt Peppers was the first concept album, though.

yeah, that's what i was poking at with the Freak Out! thing, and everyone knows the first concept album was Colorful Ventures by the Ventures in 1961

I actually still haven't heard this album yet. The Ventures were all instrumental, weren't they?

Keeping with the topic, I always thought that the opening "aaahhh" in Lovely Rita was done by John, not Paul. Pretty cool. I think Lovely Rita is one of my favorites from the album.

So where does the concept come in? I remember reading in an article about concept albums a long time ago that it had something to do with colors...

you have to listen to it to get the effect, but yes, the songs are all color-related, and the songs, well, reflect that color, (no, not like, this is what Blue sounds like), songs like Blue Moon, Yellow Jacket, Green Leaves of Summer, etc., they all tie in well
