Bob Schneider / Scabs / Ubly Americans

Most are probably unfamiliar with Bob and his myriad bands. His offical releases pale in comparison to the numerous live bootlegs availabe at places like this:

If you can pick up any material from the 1995 to 2003 era, that's when his bands were at their best.

    MASTERPIECE

    Boom Boom Baby (Ugly Americans)
    Freebird (Scabs)
    Lonelyland (Bob Schneider)
    More Than A Feeling (Scabs)
    Destroyer (Scabs)

    GREAT
    The Galazy Kings
    I'm Good Now (Bob)
    Bomobtracks (Scabs)
    Stereophonic Spanish Fly (UA)
    Ugly Americans (UA)

    GOOD
Songs Sung and Played on Guitar (Bob)
    Underneath the Onion Tree (Bob)
    The Californian (Bob)
Live at the Paramount Theater (B0b)

    BAD
    Lovely Creatures (Bob)

Personally, maybe the most disappointing release ever. I was 21 the year it came out and a TOTAL Iron Maiden devoteee....owned every album and EP I could get my hands on (my Maiden Japn 5 song LP is still treasured), had seen the band 6 times and couldn't wait for this new release.

And I simply didn't like it. At all. I wanted to...and tried. At first I'd listen to it all the way through and think eventually I'll hear the genius. But then I'd only make it halfway through...then didn't listen to it much...then not at all.

And not only did I never go back to SiT, I never went back to Iron Maiden. I bought some more albums out of habit and Seventh Son had some good moments (Moonglow, in particular).

The band by that point had devolved into making very formulaic, repetitive songs. IMO there is nothing on SIT the band hadn't done before and done it better. And everything I've heard from them since pales in comparison to anything they did on their first five albums.

Iron Maiden's first three albums were all very innovative and had a wide variety of song types (songs like the moody Strange World and acoustic driven Prodigal Son mixed in with their pouding, super-fast riffing on other songs). Piece of Mind was the first disc where they starte repeating themselves. Powerslave wasn't very innovative but had some great songs.

I dunno...maybe I just got older. But there's no other band in my 14,000 song catalog where I went from totally loving the band to be completely not interested like Iron Maiden.

[QUOTE=FlyGuyLXI;4324550]I can safely say 2112 is one of my least favorite Rush albums. One decent epic and 5 other songs that go nowhere.

You and a lot of other people.

But I like side 2. Something For Nothing is one of their best short songs. The Twilight Zone has a cool slow vibe to it and Lessons and Bangkok I like. I even enjoy Tears which most people seem to hate.

Combine it with the magnus opus that is 2112 and, for me, it's a masterpiece.

Fair enough, just curious because you were probably the first person I saw who hated Somewhere in Time.

I actually prefer the complex, formulaic direction Iron Maiden has taken, I don't know why but I just think they were able to pull it off. I thought they were best suited for that kind of twist and had some really great ideas they've come up with. I'm not saying I dislike their standard straight-forward heavy metal work, I for one am pretty fond of Powerslave.

Yeah, I don't mind that Maiden's sound is a little formulaic. They found a sound that works for them and stuck to it, and unlike AC/DC, there's enough variety and effort put into just about all of their work to pull it off.

As long as they still kick ass live like they do (can't wait for this April), I don't mind that they don't make another change in sound and stick to the same traditional heavy metal sound they've been doing for nearly 30 years now.

Iron Maiden will always rock as far as I'm concerned. Saw them several years ago and was blown away. They still bring it. Like I said, their disc releases just haven't done it for me for a while.

Had a fellow Maiden fan in college who kept trying to convince Somewhere in TIme was great. I never got it.

Also, from one of your other posts....when Brave New World came out I thought "I should check it out and give them another listen" and, again...it just didn't work for me. One thing I could pinpoint is much of their early stuff had a great urgency surrounding their fast material; it made me move...and I just don't get that same feeling with any of the later stuff.
