Either way, Leviathan is their best piece; it shows both the sludge and progressive Mastodon on balance and doesn't stray from being interesting to listen to; which is less I can say for CTS and I used to be hugely into prog metal two years ago, iirc. So it's not that quality that makes me think lesser of it.

I'd put Leviathan and Crack The Skye pretty much on equal footing; they're both great albums. Blood Mountain and Remission, while not bad per se, are definitely Tier 2 material from Mastodon.

Crack the Skye is a much much more progressive album than Leviathan, and I've never lost interest in it, especially everything after "The Czar", particularly because it is much more progressive.

Oh yeah, I never denied CTS was more progressive-- I just said Mastodon is better when they balance their two sounds, which is only on Leviathan.

Thats fine then. I'm just not a big sludge fan so I prefer the unbalanced prog-heavy stuff.

You should perhaps change that line of thinking.

I Consider their breach into progressive more known in Blood Mountain than Levithan

Yeah, but Blood Mountain is awful and seemingly uninspired. Lots of filler, etc. Oh yeah, did I mention that it sucks yet?

This Mortal Soil is one of my favorites, but blood mountain is almost my least favorite. For some reason Leviathan doesn't really do much for me, though Aqua Dementia is easily the 2nd best song they've done.
