The production quality of Death Magnetic is really what killed it for most people, including myself.

The music itself wasn't bad at all.

Actually it was, it was no St. Anger bad but it still was pretty bad. Metallica in midage crisis trying to appease their classic fanbase with a "return to roots" that wasn't actually a return to such.

That being said, it's probably the best Metallica album since The Black Album (although I'd only rank it slightly ahead of Load)... but yeah, Rick Rubin might as well just take the mantle of Ruiner of Albums and run with it, considering his disastrous efforts for Metallica, Lacuna Coil, RHCP, and Linkin Park in recent years (although, in all fairness, Linkin Park supplied him some of the worst material to work with imaginable)...

It actually has some decent songs on it. I'd probably give it a 4.5/10.

i didn't even listen to "death magnetic". the songs i heard from it were enough cause for me to focus my attention elsewhere.

of course, the same would have happened with "chinese democracy", but i was trapped in a car with a friend who bought it.
