This has been a really surprising year in music for me. I discovered artists i never thought i would like or listen to and one of my favourite bands had the most disappointing album of the year (Weezer - Raditude) But, here are the ones that I think deserve the recognition.
1) Dead Weather - Horehound
Who saw this one coming? i don't even think Jack White did. So unique. So awesome. best album of 2009 in my opinion.
2) Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures
I reiterate, who saw this one coming? Finally, someone had the balls to make a good, raw-powered rock record. Too bad it was a couple of already established rock legends that had to do it.
3) Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
Proof that these guys have some vision in their music. This album took a couple of listens to understand, but once you understand it its a thing of beauty.
4) Metric - Fantasies
My Canadian content. For me, Metric took a long long time to get into, but this album made it easy. From the introductory hypnotic Help I'm Alive, to the anthemic big rock Stadium Love, this album was a necessary addition to the list
5) Aqua - Greatest Hits
Just kidding - could you imagine?
Seriously, its gotta go to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
From the first note i know this was going to be bigger and better than anything they've done yet. Karen-O's squeals and screams are unmatched by any other singer. The energy on this album is undeniable and makes it worth listening to over and over agian.
Honerable Mention!!
Where The Wild Things Are Soundtrack
Never has a soundtrack ever matched up with a movie with such congruency. The match-up of Spike Jonze and Karen-O was perfect from the get go. Though I'm sure the soundtrack by itself would sound a bit off, if you have seen the movie and then listen to it, you can't help but feel like a little kid again.
