Over 1/3 of the Beatles Catalog

So, just for the fun of it, I did some math to see how much of the canonical catalog we will have when Rubber Soul DLC releases.

If you count 44 tracks on disc (counting Sgt Pepper and With a Little Help as separate songs, but excluding the Within You Without You mashup since its not technically part of the Beatles "canon" defined here as the original 13 albums (including the American compilation of Magical Mystery Tour) plus Past Masters (which comes to a total of 212 songs if you discount redundant tracks like single vs. album version of Let It Be and Get Back, and the German singles, etc.)

Then add all songs as separate songs but avoiding repeats from Abbey Road (i.e. Sun King/Mean Mr. Mustard = 2 songs, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End = 2 songs, since The End is already counted) comes to 11 for Abbey Road,

then 8 for Sgt. Pepper, and 11 for Rubber Soul.

We get a total of 75 canonical tracks in game divided by 212 and multiplied by 10 comes to

35% of the entire Beatles canon.

I'd say it's pretty impressive that we have over 1/3 of the entire catalog (which would be 33% for you younger folks who don't know math) in just a few months of the game's release.

    Good job, HMX.

    Here's hoping we reach 100%.

    ditto, Hugoku,

but you have to admit, while some people have complained about the small number of songs on disc, and are paranoid that we won't get any more songs, 35% is really not bad considering the short time this game has been available. I was actually impressed when the final number came out.

And even if we did reach 100% of the canon as I have chosen to define it, there's still room for more DLC, like the German singles, single versions of Get Back, Let It Be, and Love Me Do, plus Free As a Bird, Real Love, more Love tracks, Anthology tracks...

with a back catalog like that, we could end up with the entire canon plus a lot more, but time will tell, and for now I can say I am more than satisfied.

    Thanks, HMX

So, we have 1/3 of the Beatles songs - good math! As for the ETA to a complete back catalog ... so far, HMX has been releasing one album a month. If there are 13 albums, plus enough singles to make up about 3 or 4 more months of releases, then we should have the entire catalog by March or April 2011.

I thought it was kind of odd when people complained that there was only 45 songs. My thoughts were "Isn't that like a fourth of the pre-breakup catalog?" And it was pretty close to a fourth. HMX could've done like Neversoft and put in songs from other bands that have no business being in that game, thank god they didnt.

At 21%, the on-disc songs make up a little less than a quarter of the official canon, but I see your point and agree with you.

Well, I doubt that we will ever reach 100%. A third is pretty good already, though. And who knows, maybe TBRB gets another small kick in Xmas sales and HMX might announce another Album, say Revolver, then we'd have a really good set. Actually I just bought a remastered pack including Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers and Abbey road, which seem to be the core-four in many peoples eyes. So I think that could be possible.

But beyond that, I think the air gets pretty thin, since TBRB has a smaller fanbase than RB2 and - as always - only a part of that fanbase downloads new songs. Well, actually I don't know real numbers. I'd really like to know how many ppl own the game and downloaded new tracks...

Anyway. I hope for some more early stuff and the White Album. But if that isn't profitable for HMX , I really hope they give us two final best of-compilations, each containing ten of their most wanted songs. One with ten "studio era" tracks , one with ten "pre studio era" tracks. Hey Jude, Yesterday, Rain, Strawberry Fields, Magical Mystery Tour, Help!, Things we said today, I'll be back... and stuff like that
