Yeah, of course. But is a newer one (90's to early 00's) still good-sounding? I mean, I'd love to get a vintage one like this more than anything, but I can't fork out $5000, and neither can my dad. Plus, I'm not a pro yet, so I don't need the fanciest thing on the planet. I guess the point is, would something along the lines of this or this, or even this be worth the money? I mean, they're all American-made, in good shape, and you've got the Fender quality and look. Plus, they're all under $400, which is within my range. Would that be worth looking at?

That "Rain thing" is a dedicated audio computer, designed for running audio software, with a Windows 7 install optimized for audio work.
It's got up to 16 GB of DDR3 RAM, 6 Terabytes of HDD space, and enough Firewire and USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports to handle anything I can throw at it.
And my goal here is to be able to record say, a 5 piece band (2 guitars, bass, vocals, drummer) all at once, each with their own track, which is why I plan on shelling out 500 some bucks for an audio interface with 8 XLR/1/4" inputs and preamps.
Included in these costs, however, is new recording software, my new dream guitar, and a bass so I can lay down bass tracks without needing a bassist sitting in the studio.

Mexican strats are just cheaper quality. If you eve play an American strat and then downgrade to a Mexican strat, there's noticeable difference. The quality of an American strat is much higher than the Mexican ones. The Mexican Strats I've always felt were just one step ahead a Squier, and we all know how horrific Squiers sound.
The cheapest new American Strats go for around $500-$600 somewhere around there. And I haven't played a bad American strat and I actually would want to get one one day.
Guitars are funny with re-sale values. It's nothing like cars where as soon as you take it off the lot you lose money on it and continue to slowly lose more over time. Guitars are different. If you try to sell a guitar that's only 5 years old, you won't get what you paid for it. But, if you sell a guitar that's 15 years old, you'll definitely get what you paid for it and probably a good deal more. 15-20 years old is really where you start to get into vintage guitar land and many guitar collectors are really into getting these old guitars as they are a nice addition to any collection and they are willing to pay a bundle for them.
My stepdad sold his 20 year old Kramer (they don't make Kramers anymore either), he's never told me how much he got for it, but it was enough to put a downpayment on his new Dodge Ram that he's driving now. I'm assuming somewhere in the $5000-$7000 range when the guitar was really only worth maybe $1000 back in 1990.
