Time Of Orchids - Sarcast While
Genre: Avant-Prog

Julee Cruise guest stars on this excellent album that showed the band moving away from the more abrasive and metallic side of avant-prog and embracing a much dreamier, poppier, and more carefully layered take on their sound (which is of course still weird as hell).
This should be one of the rare avant-prog albums that fans of dreampop, post-rock, and post-hardcore could very possibly dig.
Based on reviews, most people seem to prefer the follow-up to this album, but most also have a habit of believing this band watered down Kayo Dot's sound so they're clearly dumb.

Recommended If You Like: Kayo Dot, Thinking Plague, Idiot Flesh, Miasma & The Carousel Of Headless Horses, Zu, and Art Bears.

Greg Sage - Straight Ahead
Genre: Garage Rock/Indie Rock
Year: 1985

Wipers dialed back a few. Sparse and sad as hell, plus really difficult to pin down. The whole thing's great, but if the 1st half was as strong as the 2nd it would be up there with the Wipers debut.
Why couldn't this folk-punk stuff that's gotten popular have followed this album's blueprint instead of goddamned Against Me?

Recommended If You Like: Wipers, Neil Young, Violent Femmes, Jonathan Richman, Beat Happening, and Daniel Johnston.

Messer Chups - Crazy Price
Genre: Exotica/Surf Rock
Year: 2003

Insanely fun homage to all things B-movie, full of nods to old spy flicks, sci-fi/horror, surf guitars, theremins, samples of girls with hot voices, and general weirdness.
These guys are apparently actually fairly well-known in their Russian home, but it's a shame these guys still haven't caught on around here, perhaps due to the fact they totally plummeted downhill after this LP.

Recommended If You Like: Esquivel, Man Or Astroman, The Cramps, and Fantomas doing ecstasy together.

Rollerskate Skinny - Horsedrawn Wishes
Genre: Noise-Pop/Shoegaze
Year: 1996

This was Kevin Shields's brother's band (though he left before this LP was recorded), and though many similarities can be pointed out, Rollerskate Skinny is very far from being a MBV clone.
The album starts like the missing link between Smiley Smile and Moose, but later on things calm down and we're left with a superior version of Mercury Rev.

Recommended If You Like: The Flaming Lips, My Bloody Valentine, Sparklehorse, Mercury Rev, The Boo Radleys, and Moose.

Maybe it's because I'm a big fan of female vocals, but I absolutely fell in love with the vocals on Pleasure.

The Heats - Have An Idea
Genre: Powerpop
Year: 1980

One of the most underpraised powerpop albums of all time, oftentimes making me think of a perfect marriage between Tom Petty and The Knack.
389 last.fm listeners = **** the tone-deaf world.

Recommended If You Like: Tom Petty, Badfinger, The Knack, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, and Shoes.

Witchfynde - Cloak And Dagger
Genre: Heavy Metal/Hard Rock
Year: 1983

This album gets slammed regularly for it's focus on melody, upbeat rhythms, and hard rock riffs. So if you think those sound like bad things or you think early Judas Priest is lame then this probably isn't for you (Much like oxygen).
Their debut is the one that gets the NWOBHM Hall Of Fame nod (and is more to the taste of most metalheads), but I enjoy this one quite a bit more.

Recommended If You Like: Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Grim Reaper, Tygers Of Pan Tang, and Demon.
