Love this album. I'm usually not a fan of big band either, but this one hits home. I'll back up this recommendation too. Fun fact: listen to "Open Beauty" and hear the first electric trumpet solo ever. It's run through an Echoplex tape delay unit to make it sound even more badass, too.
Would you pay for music by Beck?
    Maybe.
What if you heard he owned a plane made of gold?
    Sure.
Good, because he needs the money.

I can't wait to check it out(by the way, sorry for anyone who was waiting for a blog post, it's up now). By the way the Green on Red album was pretty awesome.

Neo-psych that isn't interchangable with indie rock! Yeah, takin' it back to the garage (Okay fine, there are some soft tracks too)!

I remember my friend reviewing this album when released. Quite calming if i remember.

  6. #576
i'm not sure if "calming" is an adjective i'd use, though it's not an intense listen the entire way through either.

i noticed on RYM several people didn't like the acoustic tracks, but i think they're great and i have a soft spot for records that can effectively mix stuff like that in with their jazz freakouts and crazy effects-drenched stuff.

i find the album calming, personally. This isn't zeuhl or anything way over the top that's going to send me off the deep end on a weekend trip wriggling a writhing on the ground.

    Steaming Coils - Breaded
    Genre: Art Rock/Experimental Pop
    Year: 1989

Totally brilliant and playful, these guys can simultaneously sound like They Might Be Giants, Kaleidoscope, Captain Beefheart, and Thinking Fellers Union while never sounding goofy or forgetting to create memorable and enjoyable music.
This album is actually a pretty recent discovery for me, but after only a handful of listens I'm completely in love with this album. These guys seriously had the songwriting and creative chops to become legends amongst freaks for years to come.

Recommended If You Like: U Totem, Deerhoof, Ariel Pink, Volcano The Bear, Captain Beefheart, and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282.
