About "grunge", I think it makes sense to have such a genre. I don't really see any "punk" in Nirvana songs like "Come As You Are" or "All Apologies". Those are just alternative rock. Seeing as how I hate Pearl Jam, I'd prefer that Nirvana wasn't put in the same genre as PJ. They sound completely different. I suppose the solution is to just have 2 genres - good and bad. According to opinion, of course. I'm not saying Nirvana is universally good; they might not be someone's cup of tea. But talent should be recognized universally.
