    Mastodon - Crack The Skye
    9.5/10
Although not as strong a sludge metal album as Leviathan or most anything from some of the other major names in the Atlanta sludge scene, the variety of vocal styles employed as well as the introduction of more elements of progressive metal and heavy psych make it an exceptional release despite its inability to be easily pigeonholed cleanly into one specific sub-genre.

Phideaux - Number Seven (2010 remaster)
    9/10
Slightly polished and reworked version of the earlier 2009 release, restructuring the album's previous sixteen tracks to ten, resulting most notably in the creation of a couple of epic-length tracks on the album's first and third acts ("Waiting For The Axe To Fall" at 19:23 and "Love Theme From 'Number Seven'" at 13:50). Am somewhat surprised there wasn't comparable consolidation in the second act, but, seeing as the album is meant to be taken in in its entirety, perhaps it wasn't necessary. The end result is more polished, but the overall character of the album changes little.

You know, i actually really liked that album. I was introduced to Mastodon heavily from Crack the Skye. Although many people say its one of their weakest, I actually prefer this and Blood Mountain over their earlier ones.

Yeah, I got into the band with Leviathan, so I can somewhat understand both sides of the coin on this one. For fans of the band's first two albums in particular, they're looking for more material that sounds similar to that... nothing wrong with that, mind you, but as a pure sludge band Mastodon isn't up to the standards of a lot of the other Southern sludge bands (Torche, Kylesa, Baroness, Rwake, Eyehategod, etc.). What really got me into the band was the more experimental approach they took with Blood Mountain and then solidified with Crack The Skye.

This is Fats Domino! - Fats Domino (5.25/10)

Definitely one of those singles kind of musician. Great man, but I had no interest in his style of R&B.

    Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. 9/10

Incubus' peak of creativity, this album contains a nice blend of at least 5-6 different genres of music ranging from funk to metal, from rap to rock and a little in between.

Anthrax - Among The Living 9.75/10

    Favorite Anthrax album. 'nuff said.

    Soundgarden - Superunknown 8.75/10

Never was a huge Soundgarden fan, but this is still a great album regardless.

Big Star - Radio City 9.5/10

Just shy of being my favorite Big Star album (inches behind #1 Record), one of the best straight-up classic rock albums ever. In the vein of Boston's debut, just some really awesome songs.

More Power Pop than Classic Rock.

    Worm Orobouros - S/T
    6/10

A little too spare for my tastes, and the vocalist sounds a bit too much like Dean Wareham from Galaxie 500. Which is OK, I guess, considering it's a lady and it's ostensibly a metal band. I picked it up because Aesop Dekker plays drums on it, but the drums are hardly there at all. It's atmospheric gothy doomy stuff, so if that's your bag, you could do worse.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

Earth - Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version

    4/5

Three 15 to 30 minute tracks for pure drone-doom goodness.
