Pinback - Blue Screen Life I may or may not have mentioned this one before here.

Despite being a pretty mellow sound, it's great for running/exercise. 9/10.

Hostsonaten - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
    8/10
Genesis-style symphonic prog with lyrics from Samuel Taylor Coelridge's epic poem. Musicianship is extremely good, but occasionally meandering instrumental sections detract from an otherwise impressive release.

    Shining - Blackjazz
    7.25/10
Eclectic mix of jazz fusion, quirky electronic music, and alternative metal... more impressive as a concept than an actual release, as its own pushes toward musical intensity detract from the instrumentation and rhythmic/melodic ideas on display.

    Gorguts - Considered Dead
    9/10

Just a downright fantastic tech death album. Absolutely love the tone of the bass they got going here, much like bands like Death and Obscura (although Obscura have been heavily influenced by Gorguts I assume, especially considering they take their name from a Gorguts album/song).
Really love the overall feel of the album too. Production is gritty but clear.
    Really loving this album.

    Rotting Christ - Genesis
    7/10

You know, I feel like I like this album more than I say I do. I dunno.
Either way, they kinda remind me of the black metal version of Septicflesh (although the black metal doesn't seem to really be that present in this album), but so far I prefer Septicflesh more (although, granted, it took me a while to fully appreciate Septicflesh, so maybe Rotting Christ will grow on me as well)

That said, not bad, but some of the spoken vocals come off as a little cheesy IMO.

    The Knife-The Knife - 8.5

Compared to Silent Shout, this album is more thawed out in terms of emotions. Here we have a more experimental approach, that actually seems to be happier and actually more playful at points, such as during "Kino" and "Parade". The actual song construction is different too. Outside of "A Lung", the deep, distorted vocals prominently featured on Silent Shout are gone. There are more drum machines, less ominous synth, and suprisingly, there is actual guitar on some songs. The album is not flawless, however. The vocals seem looser, and as such seem to be slightly off-tune sometimes. I also found this album harder to get into than Silent Shout. Overall, it's not bad. Sure it's a change in sound, but hey, it's good.

    Astra - The Black Chord
    9/10

Oh man, do I love me some modern prog. But no modern bands have ever come close to replicating the famous 70's prog sound I have come to know and love, save for Astra. This was an extremely excellent album with heavy usage of keyboards, and *gasp* MELLOTRONS! Even though it's not full of lengthy pieces, it still manages to get the job done. I especially love the title track. Very good.

I agree. Both of these albums are just more of the same funneled through a giant helping of blah.

EDIT: The Best Coast album does have a few decent tunes on it, though.

Beach House was mediocre in 2010, nothing has changed in 2012.
