All in all, I think Absolution has the highest of the highs for Muse, and since I generally listen to music by the song rather than by the album, I think that Absolution will always last longer with me. However, in terms of the album as a whole, I enjoy listening to Resistance straight through without pausing more... in fact, it has done something to renew my faith in the "album" as a form, rather than just a vehicle for singles.

Not to crush your "moment" but MUSE has had a "cult following" (I hate that term) in the U.S. for a while.

All The Resistance is doing is bringing them into the limelight (aka "the mainstream").
May 20th, 2012: 4 long years since HMX released "Hysteria" by Muse. The wait for more Muse DLC has to end at some point, right?

So in Unnatural Selection, musewiki has the lyrics down as:
    ‘I'll still make you believe
    They are the special ones’,
but I always hear it as ‘Or else they’ll make you believe’… it makes more sense to me that way, but am I just hearing things, or has someone else heard it that way, too?

Heres the review I submitted to my university's paper for The Resistance:

Its been a long time coming but after an illustrious 10 year career of touring all over the world and a meteoric rise to superstardom the British rock sensation known as Muse may finally break through into the US charts with their 5th album The Resistance after being a total unknown in the states for so long.

The album opens with “Uprising,” it sets the stage with a very brooding tone as singer/guitarist Matt Bellamy croons on taking a pot shot at big business to a Dr. Who meets Marilyn Manson meets Depeche Mode rock fest.

It’s followed up by “Resistance” a rousing yet catchy rocker with a strong 80’s influence. The song starts to bring out the more theatrical elements of the album as the album pulls many themes from the novel 1984 but with a romantic twist.

Next up is “Undisclosed Desires,” a Timbaland-esque tune that would be very much at home at any upscale night club. It is one of the album’s more accessible and pop-friendly tracks however it is also the album’s weakest track since it lacks progression in it’s composition when compared to the other songs on the album.

“United States of Eurasia” is another track that pulls heavy inspiration from 1984. The song itself however is nothing short of impressive and mindblowing. The song’s chorus soars majestically and almost seems as if the late Freddie Mercury was singing it.

As the bombastic track starts to die down it moves into a very somber rendition of Chopin’s “Nocturne In E-Flat Major” played by Bellamy on piano.

The 2nd half of the album begins with “Guiding Light,” a stadium-rock anthem reminiscent of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” It’s followed by the heavy hitter “Unnatural Selection” a riff-filled track that draws on Muse’s earlier edgy sound. The intensity strengthens as “MK ULTRA” ensures that the listener is utterly floored by the time the explosive hard-rock song is over.

The band takes things down a notch going into the playful jazzy romp “I Belong To You.” It also reinforces the classical and romantic qualities that are echoed throughout the album.

The album concludes with the most ambitious part of the album, a 3-part symphony that would be right at home on the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey entitled “Exogenesis.” “Exogenesis” breaks away from the album’s main theme as it tells a sobering what-if about humanity leaving a dilapidated Earth in order to find a new home amongst the stars, to start over with a small glimmer of hope.

The song itself is pure genius and simply overwhelming, words cannot describe how moving the song truly is. It could easily cement Bellamy as one of the greatest composers in the past few decades and cement Muse’s place as one of the most innovative bands in music history.

As cliché as it may sound resisting The Resistance is futile.

Let me preface this by saying I had HUGE expectations for this album and for Exogenesis. Let me also explain that I'm an extremely hard person to please (I've gotten into some arguments already earlier in this thread over BH&R). And now I begin:

Exogenesis is the biggest waste of 12 minutes and 51 seconds I've heard in a while. It takes up almost a quarter of the album. For no good reason. If it wasn't Muse, I'd have switched to another track. I've listened to it half a dozen times since yesterday, still trying to find some redeeming qualities. And I can't find anything. It comes off to me as overwhelmingly pretentious. It goes, and goes, and goes, nowhere.

    Highlights:
    Resistance
    Unnatural Selection
    Uprising

    Lowlights:
    Exogenesis
    I Belong To You

    Meh:
    USOE
    MK Ultra
    Guiding Light
    Undisclosed Desires

I don't understand how Muse is going to perform half of these live. Actually, I wouldn't pay to see half of these live. I've previously raged in this thread about BH&R being too "raw" for me. Well I want raw Muse back. Stop the drum samples and electronic basslines. Bring some character back into the music. More distortion, more power.

If Muse/Matt came out with an entirely symphonic album and labeled it a concept album or a side project, I'd accept it for what it was. But I feel extremely disappointed that only 3 of these tracks are half-decent. Another 2 years or so of waiting for something.

Maybe the B-sides will be good. Maybe the next live album will cut out the crap and deliver the classics. I can only hope. I'm debating with myself, thinking about demoting Muse to my #2 favorite band behind SSPU. I'm really that disappointed.

    My album ranking:

    Origin of Symmetry
    Showbiz
    Absolution
    BH&R
    The Resistance

    1. Make up your bloody mind.
    2. There are NO electronic basslines. It's all Chris.
    3. What is it you don't like about Exogenesis? All you said was that its "pretentious." That really doesn't tell us anything seeing as A LOT of Muse's songs are very pretentious and we love them.

As far as the electronic basslines, I suppose I'm referring more to the filtered, overproduced sound of the bass on certain tracks.

And Exogenesis... I can't find the Muse in it. It has Matt's vocals... and... one short anti-climax in Cross Pollination? The more I think about it, the more I seem to discover my problem with this song, and certain elements of this album. It seems to push Chris and Dom into the background to allow more room for Matt to play with his ego (which has apparently escaped from a pink box). Exogenesis seems like a solo project gone wrong. It's not "Muse", it's "Matt Bellamy". I won't argue that it's bad music, I will argue that it's not the Muse I love.

I guess I was expecting an epic, progressive voyage through piano and rock supplemented by symphonic climaxes and powerful vocals. Butterflies and Hurricanes + Citizen Erased + Knights of Cydonia + Space Dementia, or something.

Instead, I find it to be a slow, plodding, ride through ambient strings with sleepy vocals punctuated by some sounds from an electric guitar and some toms, sprinkled with slow piano. Ruled by Secrecy + Megalomania + Hoodoo.

I'm sure there are more arguments to be made. I hope now that you see my viewpoint.

Uprising is now #1 on the Billboard Hot Alternative Charts, so that is their first #1.

Regarding Exogenesis, I definitely see where you are coming from Nalk as regards to it "not going anywhere." I absolutely love Overture myself and feel that it is awesome, I feel that it is building towards something, but that something is not quite as big as the build-up itself. I enjoy Cross Pollination pretty well and I do still like Redemption, but it seems to stay at about the same level with no climax.

That said, I still like the whole album and Exogenesis as a whole, but I wish the last two parts of it could have been closer to Overture, as I think that part is purely awesome
