foo fighters and the white stripes
Björk: She has consistently been a huge critical (and, to some degree, commercial) success since her career in The Sugarcubes. I think she was even nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actress one year...
The New Pornographers
System of a Down: Probably the only modern "metal" (the genre is debatable) band to have gained widespread acclaim from both metal and non-metal music publications. They also had a rare amount of commercial success.
Radiohead
The White Stripes
M.I.A.
Outkast
Sufjan Stevens
The Strokes
This is just my opinion, of course. I'm more of an alternative music listener myself, so I'm not too familiar with modern metal or hard rock.
Afraid nobody 'round here
understands my potato
They think I'm only a spud boy
looking for a real tomato
Devo - "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA"
The only good band I can think of is Kings Of Leon. I'm dead serious too.
I see Scarecrow People.

Modest Mouse
Polyphonic Spree
The Shins
RHCP (older stuff is still better but they rock)
Radiohead
More Modest Mouse Please
Radiohead, Primus, Neil Diamond, more Pixies, The Smiths and The Flaming Lips would rock too!
I'm gonna go with:
The Chili Peppers
Disturbed
Green Day
Foo Fighters
That's all I got for now.
For christ's sake. RHCP released [their best selling in the US and best album] Blood Sugar Sex Magik in 1991. They released their second best selling album (Californication) in 1999. Their best selling album since 2000 is Stadium Arcadium, which has sold less 1/4 the copies as Californication worldwide (3.5 million since double-albums are counted twice per sale). They've been around since the early 80s.
THEY'RE NOT A 2000s BAND.
