Think of 15 albums, CDs, LPs (if you're over 40) that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life. Dug into your soul. Music that brought you to life when you heard it. Royally affected you, kicked you in the wazoo, literally socked you in the gut, is what I mean.
1. Guns N Roses " Appetite For Destruction"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-AYAv0IoWI
I recall when I first heard 'Sweet Child O' Mine", on my clock radio ,when I was in grade 7. I remember saying that I loved the guitaring in the song yet the singer was terrible. But, as time would soon prove, Axl's vocals would prove to be the fuel behind every song. No album has ever come out with its guns blazing the way this one does. From the opening rhythm of "welcome to the Jungle" to the epic irreverent ballad of "Rocket Queen " , listeners are taken on a tour de force of rawness, power, and truly the last bad boys of Rock and Roll.
2. Bruce Springsteen "Born in the USA"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPudiBR15mk
The first album that made me feel patriotic and tell me that stories are best told in song. Thanks Dad.
3. AC/DC "Razor's Edge"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvoeeq-BH4w
AC/DC were at their of their game with this power house rock album. I was a late bloomer, in getting on the AC/DC rock train, and it was this disc in where I climbed aboard.
4. Metallica " ...and Justice For All"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU_ggFovJNo
I spent 1 year straight, in grade 8 , listening to this cassette tape every morning in my Sony Walkman, delivering papers. Metallica exposed me to sounds and energy , that I had never before experienced, by my tender ears. The energy and anger that is on this album, has yet to be repeated . Justice was served, and I took my punishment willingly.
5. Aerosmith "Toys in The Attic"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMVqWGtqy9c
My favorite band of all time. here is a band that is still making music and touring , with all of it's original members since 1973. "Toys" is the greatest Aerosmith alblum of all time. Not only did it come out the year I was born, but it contained the staple songs of Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way and the title track. This album is all killer and no filler.
6. Aerosmith "Pump"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRt-e...eature=related
Not only does Pump have the greatest disc cover, but its the only disc that rivals Toys in being pound for pound it's equal. It re-cemented that the Toxic Twins could still write music that kicks your butt and be sober while doing it. Long live the boys from Boston !
7. ZZ Top "Eliminator"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHRHc5HmFHg
Long beards, sexy girls in their music videos and guitar playing that reminds you that the blues can rock!
8. Twisted Sister "Stay Hungry"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL3C_eAtlS0
This was the first time music was banned in my home. ( I was in grade 4) My mother hated the album's cover. The songs were just as corny and funny.Like any good boy, I hid the tape under my mattress. I used to go to my friend's house after school , and have a listening party to the entire album, acting out each song. I used to draw the Twisted Sister symbol on my school books. T.S. has never came close to making another master piece , and that's OK with me. This one has all you need.
10. R.E.M "Monster"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wtxz4yV_-3g
REM is awesome..and they are even more awesome when they plug in their guitars. The least loved REM disc by critics and most fans, is the most listened one by me.
11. Michael Jackson "Bad"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex30DYwQlHU
I know Michael was getting whiter, but this album show cased a Michael that' could have been' , if he continued being cool, instead of creepy. Is there really a better song than Smooth Criminal, by the King of Pop? Annie is OK !
12. George Michael "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VVya...eature=related
My first 'guilty pleasure" But, as far as pop singers go, no one holds a candle to his vocals. I forgive him his future mistakes because of his past genius.
13. U2 'Achtung Baby"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_82IYrdM2vU
I used to hate U2. Hard to believe it now. I held this grudge on them, when their song "With or Without You" beat out "Sweet Child o Mine" for the most requested song of 1987. But when they released 'Achtung', I couldn't ignore their excellence. There isn't a song on this album that couldn't be a hit , and it it is timeless enough, that it could be released today and sound 'current'
14. Motley Crue "Dr. Feelgood"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDWxf5qkAIs
Just what the doctor ordered. And they were the first band I saw live , when I was but 14.
15. Jon Bon Jovi "Young Guns 2 Soundtrack"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upenR6n7xWY
I listened to this disc 100 plus times in high school. I love the mixture of rock and country. And I saw the movie about as many times.
I know I may have forgotten some,...but when I look at your lists I will say " ahh yes!" but this is what came to me with me having t look at my music collection or iTunes.
