I bought Heavy Rain and rented Alan Wake.

They're two completely different games, but I enjoyed Heavy Rain a lot more. Alan Wake had a pretty good story, but I was bored with the fighting by the second chapter. Hit baddies with light, shoot, repeat. During the last half of the game, I was literally just running away and dodging the cloned axemen because I was so sick of fighting the enemies with the boring combat system.

Heavy Rain's story was also good, and I felt a lot more immersed in it than Alan Wake.

+1 to Rock_Starman saying Deadly Premonition is better than both, though.

I have a friend who swears by Deadly Premonition (I likely wouldn't have ever played the game if not for him). I found it a bit harder to get into than he did, though. I don't care that much when it comes to production values, but it definitely should have been polished a bit more, particularly the very mood-killing music and kinda flat voice acting. It is a budget title, though, and was still a really fun game that doesn't get enough credit.

heavy rain looks like a boring movie i'm not allowed to sleep through while alan wake looks like a silent hill game i won't want a refund on after a few hours.

Both games are too different, Heavy Rain is great, it have a great story and its too inmersive. I don't played enough Alan Wake to value it.
