Talking Heads' entire Stop Making Sense lineup with Beck performing guest vocals, guitar, and whatever the **** else he feels like.
Would you pay for music by Beck?
    Maybe.
What if you heard he owned a plane made of gold?
    Sure.
Good, because he needs the money.

Beck is quite a talented multi-instrumentalist.

Speaking of which, random Beck question; is the saxophone part in "The New Pollution" sampled, or played by Beck or a session musician? Really addicting saxophone part.

He may not actually be that talented at very many instruments, but he plays so many and knows how to write damn good songs, so it doesn't matter all that much. After Odelay, he stopped playing most of the parts on the record and just had his touring musicians play them. Which is good, because they're an incredibly talented bunch of guys.

It's sampled. From "Venus" by Joe Thomas, a super-duper obscure tenor player. I can't find his records anywhere, if it means anything.

it's long out of print, but easily found on soulseek.

i don't think groove merchant records even made it to the 80's.

I'd take a varied multi-instrumentalist over a virtuoso at one in most cases.

I mean, on Odelay, he played (taken from the album credits, though for my convenience copied from wiki which I checked for accuracy): organ, acoustic guitar, bass, harmonica, percussion, celeste, drums, electric guitar, keyboards, electric piano, vocals, clavinet, slide guitar. Not bad at all.

Beck does sampling so well. While I'm not in the "sampling is lazy, blah blah blah" camp, nothing annoys me more than a really bad sampling job with a super-obvious and popular song.
