Most, if not all, of the people who have posted here like metal. They just like alternative, too. Hell, the metal fan that you praised for posting here likes alternative.

In any case, has there been a conversation about skilled alternative guitarists without mention of Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, HoR?

To prove this (though I haven't posted), I like metal and alternative. And even then, I don't like all of each genre. Not giving examples, that's too hard for me to think of. But I do like both.

I have very rarely on these forums encountered an open supporter of metal, who requested metal bands in their signature or in Ultimate Setlist, or who would defend metal as anally as some people I've encountered have defended alternative.

If they are metal fans, they seem to be hiding it well, as the forums seem to be dominantly alt rock.

Yeah, I've seen from your RB4 in Ultimate Setlist you're not just an alt-rock fanboy. But most people on the forums seem to be raving about getting Paranoid Android and Muse, but not one mention of why the most underrated metal band of all time, Rainbow, is not on the game, for example.

Great alt-rock guitarists to look up: Marnie Stern, Robert Smith/Porl Smith, Johnny Marr (listen to the way he ****ing harmonizes, leads, and synchronizes with the rhythm section in most of their songs, absolutely genius, also note his tone and progressions), Peter Buck (dat arpeggios), Brian Setzer (arguably not alternative but since alt is such an expensive classification I'll include him anyway, look up his solo stuff, this dude could play technical and creative circles around 99% of guitarists from any era), Arto Lindsay, Prince (again, arguably not alternative, but experimental enough to throw in there anyway), Captain Sensible, Dean Ween, Daniel Ash, and the pre-mentioned Lee Renaldo and Thurston Moore.

EDIT: Sweet baby jesus how could I forget J Mascis and Vernon Reid? Other dudes who could play circles around pretty much everybody else.

Also, check out this live compilation of Jack White soloing the crap out of a few tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaiBb1rEWY4. Pay attention to the solo during "Let's Build A Home".

Another thing: Anne of St. Vincent performing a solo, soulful-as-**** cover of The Beatles "Dig A Pony". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lan-UQfN0zs&hd=1

Coheed is a weird mishmash of Alternative, Hard rock, metal, and a little progressive influence. But they aren't prog rock, to be sure.

ProgArchives lists them as Crossover Prog, as opposed to Prog Related, which is a catchall for bands with some progressive influence (such as Iron Maiden, Muse, Queen, David Bowie, etc.). Say what you will, but Coheed very much is progressive rock, with the possible exception of SSTB.

They're really are a lot of huge Metal fans and supporters on these forums, even if you don't always see them. And you do see a lot of support in the Ultimate Setlist forum, it's not always requests for Slipknot or A7X. There is a request thread for Rainbow's "Rising" on the first page of it right now. I don't know if you were here for these threads, but a whole lot of Metal fans contributed to them:

At times there may not seem like there are a lot of Metal fans on these forums but that simply is not the case. No one is hiding you might just not notice it all the time.
