When I said it was an unpopular opinion, I was under the impression that most people saw them as music for college kids who like Dave Matthews Band and want to tune in to the Grateful Dead experience. They're more like acid rockers with the diversity/humor/intelligence of Frank Zappa and the musical skill of some of the best prog-rockers.

Well, there is that connection to the Dead, especially in both bands' live performances, but yeah. Both Phish and Umphrey's McGee take a bit of a different direction, adding experimentation to the already well-trodden improvisation route.
