Punk isn't dead, it's just in a bit of a lull, and there's been considerable pressure to make it go further in the direction of pop than it already has. In some ways, it's like prog was in the 1980s. There's still plenty of good punk around, but a lot less of it is in the mainstream, and it's not as common as it was in decades past. But it's not going anywhere.

Well, "experimentation" is a loaded word. You don't have to do something truly crazy or polarizing to be doing something "experimental".

Until my next punk session comes along that is.
Of course. I'm glad you dig The Gits, Mia Zapata's voice was a weapon in and of itself.

I recommend looking into The Coathangers first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Er1DFJd-sY

The last link I listed is my personal favorite.

They've got a surprisingly varied sound, bridging the gap between twee, traditional punk, post-punk, surf rock, and garage rock.

Pitchfork sometimes has cool interviews, but that's all I really go there for.

    it's not really purism.

it's just that they never were punk. plain and simple, they didn't have the sound that matches punk

why is this such a hard concept to grasp?

It's really hard to determine what's Punk and what isn't.
I thought it was about being all "DGAF", but the elitists add so much rules for Punk that it's basically become the genre that gives the most amount of ****s. this is why Sum 41 don't wanna call themselves Punk (I wouldn't either, though).
