adding to the metallica discussion; Ride the Lightning is their best album and only "true" classic
everything else they've done is very mediocre
Le Desordre, C'est Moi
Resident Emo Purist/Elitist
I may be in the minority, then, in enjoying the first three albums thoroughly. AJFA is okay.
Blow yer' harmonica son
These days, I enjoy Kill Em All the most with it's punky style. I, however, thoroughly enjoy up to and including AJFA without apology.

Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album, and I think it's a classic. Kill 'Em All is up there as well. Master of Puppets is good, but not the album people make it out to be. I can respect what Metallica was doing on ...And Justice for All, but for whatever reason it doesn't do a whole lot for me. If they had continued moving in the direction they did on that album, though, they probably would've been a solid metal outfit for a little while longer. Oh well.
As per my favorite metal album, I'm not sure. Maybe Transilvanian Hunger?
Here's an unpopular opinion, I like all of Metallica's albums after ...AJFA, even St. Anger. My favorite album from them is probably Ride.
As for a favorite Metal album? That's too hard to say. Rising is definitely up there. Rust in Peace definietly is not.

I never understood the hype about Rust in Peace in comparison to Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? In fact, it was the first Megadeth album in chronological order that didn't blow me away.

That punk discussion a few pages back reminds me that I seem to be the only person who's ever heard of pop-punk.
