Pointless, really, since instrument sales went down because everyone already had half a million lying around.

They went as non-specific as they'd get with the Midi adapter (which was a good idea for the Fender). The PS3 and Wii are the only 2 that are easy to make compatible since they both require dongles. The 360 versions require special controler licensing and need to meet specific specifications, and it may not be possible to get a universal adapter to function for them.

^ I was talking about the next generation, not the current generation. That is, if current controllers won't work on the next-gen systems.

Just a few things that I'm sure have already been covered but I can't go through the entire thread:
-Proper number of band members on stage, 1-5 based on the song. (Yes there was a vocals only song in Green Day).
-Band mates get specific instrument slots (perhaps a backup as well).
-Option to add vocals to an instrument, vox-tar if you will (add a "w/ vocals" option to instrument selecting screen. Do it from the instrument controller so you don't have to fumble with an additional one.)
-In a playlist, if there is no drum parts on one specific song, have that lane disappear for one song (like in GD).
-Lanes fade slightly when there are no notes for 30 seconds or so to let you know you have a bit of a break then fade back in to warn you of upcoming notes (nice if you don't know the song that well, after 800+ songs little reminders are nice). Great to have a drink during songs.

The other members were still on-stage in Green Day. Same with Good Riddance. it sounds like an ok idea, until you realize that isn't how a concert works. A band member doesn't walk off if they're not playing a song.
This is a fault of forward compatibility. If this happened, it would quite possibly TRASH the camera cues for old songs, or just be exclusive to the new songs. Also, there's four places to attach vocals to, which makes for a ridiculous amount of mo-cap being done, and then all those possibilities being in a given song. You'd also have to adjust camera cues based on if, say, the singer and the guitarist are separate or one person. The only instances we've seen of voxtarring(ignoring harmonies) are real people that played that way, and always did so for a very specific set of songs.-Option to add vocals to an instrument, vox-tar if you will (add a "w/ vocals" option to instrument selecting screen. Do it from the instrument controller so you don't have to fumble with an additional one.)

I would add to that a very subtle "long break upcoming" indicator, so you won't end up activating Overdrive only to have it burn away while you have no notes. Yes, I know, sightreads aren't supposed to be pretty.
...I finally realize you are right on some things.
If we're having them do massive mocap, I'd much rather have the band have attitudes again than have the characters able to sing lead and play but have the generic attitude forced on you.
Having five members would be easier to do than having the voxtar characters. They'd put the keyboardist in the back (see RB2 drum score duels), take the RB2 animations and use as is, and only make new keys animations and interactions. They'd randomly select a call if more than one is possible.
One controller voxtar would then make you select two characters.
