    PS3 in black and white???

What's up guys, haven't posted here in awhile but I've got a little issue here that I need some help with.

Alright so I just got a new TV (Sony Bravia 32 inch yadayadayada...) and I hooked everything up and the TV is fine but when I hook up my PS3, it's in black and white. Now I only have the standard AV cables that came with the PS3 (those red, white, yellow ones since they worked fine with my old TV) Now my new TV has component cable connections so do I need to get the new AV component cables so my PS3 comes in color? Is my TV display in black and white because I have only the standard AV cables?

Thanks in advance. I already tried the system reboot and that didn't work. I'm not very good with all these fancy HDTV's .

If you're using RCA cables in a component slot, that sounds like your culprit. Your tv doesn't have a regualr RCA port? (The standard cables witht the PS3) If not you'll either have to get component cables or HDMI if your TV has it.

My TV only has component and HDMI ports, but the thing is my TV does support standard AV cables because I have it hooked up that way now, it's just hooked up in the component ports (red in red, white in white, and the yellow goes in green and red 2/blue remain empty according to the manual) but it comes in black and white that way.

So, I'm just wondering if full component cables will fix the black and white picture or is it some other problem.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure what the issue is then. Is there a setting on the tv to put it into RCA instead of component? Maybe it's not automatic.

Edit: Try each of the input settings. There should be an input button on your remote. I have a Sony too, but it's got a seperate RCA jack.

If you can afford it just snag an HDMI cable and go 1080p.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, just get an HDMI cable.

But, I've been reading around for a little bit on the net and apparently PS3 black and white display is pretty common and most people have the same problem I'm having, trying to put standard AV cables in component slots and vice versa so I'm pretty sure that's the problem.

    Any good HDMI cable recommendations?

I would go cheap with them. HDMI is HDMI.
They tell me that you'll lose your mind when you get older. What they don't say is that you won't miss it very much.

I've heard the more expensive is better but the $40 Sams club cable I have isn't any better than the cheap'o version Direct TV gave as far as I can tell. I'd just go with something affordable.

    Edit: Do what Banky said.

Are you sure the TV supports hooking up RCA cables through the component inputs? That would be the first time I've seen that.

RCA cables split the signal into:
    - Yellow: Video
    - White: Left audio
    - Red: Right audio

Component still uses the red and white for audio, but the video is split into the Green, Blue, and Red cables. Any one of those three video connectors is empty, it would display a black and white picture (or possibly magenta, etc depending on which one(s) are empty).

If your TV does support this, perhaps there is a setting to tell the TV to recognize the input as an RCA connection and ignore the other 2 spots. If it still thinks it's looking for a component signal, I'm thinking that's what's causing the B&W picture.

I have a VGA (computer video) adapter that does the same thing. It supports composite, S-video and component connections, but recycles the same cables to do so. If you plug in the red, blue and green cables, you get component. If you plug in only the green cable, you get composite over that cable.

There is a similar trick some audio receivers and other gizmos use to support mono audio connections. If you plug in both the "left" and "right" cables, you get stereo audio, if you plug in only the "left" cable (usually), you get mono audio through both speakers. So the technology is there, and has been there for a while.

It sounds like the TV is supposed to switch itself to composite when only one cable is plugged in, but there may be some glitch that is making it determine the other two cables are connected. You could try plugging cables into the other two ports, then pulling them out again, to see if that clears up whatever might be completing the circuit.

As znz12 also suggested, another possibility is that the TV has to be set to composite in some menu somewhere. Check the on-screen menus, or even the back of the TV, for an option or switch or something else that lets you set whether the connection is composite or component.
It's all right. Everything will work out fine.
It's all right. We're going to the end of the line!
