I beat Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock over the weekend.
Hmmm....
The best phrase I can describe it in is "strangely compelling."
The problem with Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock is how completely new user unfriendly it is. If you've read my posts on games before, you should know that I'm really big on being user friendly because it expands your fanbase and the amount of people who enjoy your games. Niche titles can be forgiven for being new user unfriendly, but Guitar Hero... Guitar Hero out of all things has NO excuse.
There are a few points that especially bring it up. Let's start with the big one: the setlist. The setlist is good and fun, don't get me wrong, but I believe the devs weren't too clear on what they wanted to achieve with the latest Guitar Hero title. Before GH6 came out, I read an interview with the devs saying how they wanted to get the series back to its roots and bring in new people to remember their "first Guitar Hero title." The setlist completely shows the lack of focus on this. As with most media, Guitar Hero works best with a hook, something to keep you going, and a HUGE finisher. Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock does not have a hook at all. The lack of a tremendous showcase opener is a real disappointment, especially if trying to show your friends your new game. I didn't really notice this until I started playing Guitar Hero 3 (which I started playing after). And by God, does that game have a hook. Almost every beginning song is HUGE and wide known and all that, totally grabs people in. Now, I don't expect every music game to be like that, especially when a lot of songs become taken. But still, having a song besides We're Not Gonna Take It to grab people in would be great for beginners.
Besides the lack of a good hook, the game really struggles to find a proper difficulty curve ESPECIALLY in the later parts of the Quest (around the Axel and Lars segment). I found some songs excruciatingly difficult and others mindnumbingly easy around the same portion of the game. And what astounded me even more is that there's a post game setlist of all the hardest songs! Why couldn't some of those doozies be in there?
The focus on heavy metal and hardcoreness also falls flat with the setlist with some really oddball choices. Dance Dance comes to mind. So I don't believe the game can use it's hard exterior to be as new user unfriendly as it is. One last thing to make it new user unfriendly is easily the worst part of Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock. The menus. There is a LOT of cool features that are in this game. But I didn't discover them until much later because everything is just drowning in a sea of menus. It shouldn't be THAT difficult to pick a friend's score and challenge it, but this game finds away.
Also, I hate some of the character designs. Some are really creepy.
I probably sound like a real moaner, but the thing is. I really enjoyed this game. Yeah, it has flaws. And yeah, I see myself going back to Rock Band. But I had a LOT of fun playing a lot of the songs, and the overthetopness is really silly but really fun in a way. I like how they constantly try to make you get 100%, and I feel that Guitar Hero Warrior's of Rock's greatest success is the same as Rock Band 3's. The incredible amount of challenges that are provided for you. This huge sea of content will ensure me going back and trying to destroy my friend's scores while earning a ridiculous number of stars and have fun while doing it. Glad they expanded on Guitar Hero 5's attempt to be deep.
Some closing statements that don't fit with my flow of thinking:
1. This game blows GH5 out of the water.
2. I hate the fact you can't see the song details and your score at the same time. So much.
3. The Quest... it's really nothing special. Besides the final battle. The final battle was just so epic.
4. I think they should have cut down some songs from each person and have more setpieces like the final boss one. They should have provided some sort of branch paths (and bosses) with a few guys on your team. Like you're actually recruiting these rock gods to help you out.
5. What exactly was so evil about the final boss and why did we have to stop him? The game pretty much said "He's evil. Go kill him."
6. The 2112 part was really cool. No idea why it was at the beginning of the game though, when it doesn't do anything for you until the end (and the setpiece fits so much better for an endgame thing).
Anyway, that's it! Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock is really fun and you should definitely give it a look

Now... time for GH3!
