FFXII and XIII beg to differ. Square s a company well past its prime as far as I'm concerned. Vagrant Story and FFIX were the last Square games I really enjoyed that weren't remakes.

Looks like Persona 3 was released on PSN today, by the way. Might pick that up since it was never released on the PS2 over here, as far as I know.

What? Path of Radiance was easily the best Fire Emblem game. Although I do love Fire Emblem 6. Although the only character to get support endings was Roy and his pick of his harem, it still introduced extremely great things like the gorgeous sprites and animation, support conversations, and incredible level design. Every level really feels like an epic war, and not in the FE10 sense where you're outnumbered 20 to 1, but the enemies are as brittle as tissue paper. One ply.

Oh and there's the only pink knight in the whole series AND THE ONLY PLAYABLE BRIGAND IN THE SERIES :3

    But seriously, FE9 is better.

To be fair I haven't played Fire Emblem (as a series) in sometime, I'll run through again.

On another note, I've been finishing up BINARY DOMAIN again, and it's still super fantastic. Great squad shooter, great shooter period. Love the dynamics.

Started playing Borderlands a couple of days ago. I have to make myself treat it like an RPG instead of an FPS, as treating it like the latter tends to get me killed an awful lot. I am starting to get into a decent rhythm of picking off enemies from afar when I can and then mixing up guns, grenades and special abilities in combat.
    Weird Al Yankovich DLC please?

I've started playing the F2P MMORPG DC Universe Online yesterday. It's surprisingly good. Especially the character creation. I've been mostly creating characters since yesterday to be honest.
It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now.

There were a number of problems with both of those games, but the combat systems were pretty far down on the list.

I love me some turn based combat. But XII and XIII were okay. I liked their combat systems better than Kingdom Hearts' anyway.

For you, perhaps, but for me they were front and center. XII turned the ATB system, which was an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' deal, into a weird MMO hybrid that boiled down to 'set gambits beforehand, then sit back and have a drink whenever there's a fight'. XIII took that even further by turning it into nothing more than a fancy game of rock-paper-scissors that wasn't particularly involving either.

Squeenix seems to want to adapt and evolve and learn from western companies, but so far they've created the worst of both worlds: the extreme dumbing down for the casual crowd and tons of microtransactions (the FFXIII-2 DLC is pretty ridiculous) that you find in too many western games and some of the most poorly written characters and convoluted plots in jRPGs. Square used to be a company that I was willing to switch consoles for, but right now it takes a lot of convincing for me to even pick up one of their games. They and Nintendo have been the biggest cases of childhood gaming 'heroes' severely letting me down in the last couple of years.
