    Is Death Metal... Dead?

Maybe I just don't have an ear for paying attention to this kind of stuff, but I feel like the death metal scene has all but died out. RARELY do I hear about a new band coming along, and if I do, it's always some melodic Arsis or At the Gates wannabe, but even those are increasingly hard to find.

Do I simply not pay enough attention to this scene or is it truly dying?

Wouldn't really call Withered death metal. Maybe blackened death, but that even doesn't seem right. My main point is that none of these bands seem to make it big. I haven't heard of any of those (aside from Withered), so it could just be me not paying attention, but I feel like death metal in genre is a dying genre. Other types of metal are really overtaking it. The only new albums I heard last year that were without a doubt death metal were by Immolation, Brain Drill, Decrepit Birth, and Malevolent Creation. Even then, none of these were debuts and only one of them was a band that was new on my radar. Oh, and I'm not counting melodeath.

I don't think death metal's vitality should be judged by it's commercial success, but to be honest, death metal is probably at it's most commercially viable right now with stuff like Dethklok and deathcore/brutal DM priming younger listeners for the real deal, while there are still loads of albums and new bands popping up each year for people who actually know what's up.

Besides, Autopsy's back. They can keep the genre alive by themselves if need be.

Hmmm guess I'm just not looking in the right places. Will listen to some of this stuff tomorrow.

What I'm mostly referring to is how pure death metal seems to be completely overridden by deathcore and the like. I stand corrected, though.

    The death of Death Metal...

...Sounds like a Death Metal song.
Bands I'd love to see as DLC for Rock Band:

    Bathory []
    Bal Sagoth []
    Amorphis []
    Emperor [X]
    Enslaved []
