Whoa, really? Wow. I might have to watch that instead of the Mariner game (the result of which I have avoided, no spoilers c'il vous plait) when I startup MLB.TV then.

That's the fifth no-hitter of the season and second perfect game. Second perfect game ties the record, we're two no-hitters from that single-season record. It's the third no-hitter in 12 days! Jeezum crow.

Well, for as disappointed as I am that the Kevin Millwood Experience is no longer the most recent no-hitter, I'm that happy that Philip Humber is no longer the most recent perfect game

There are now 22 perfect games in baseball history. Eight of them have come in the last 14 years. That's just insane. Five of them have come in the last four years. Those numbers not including Armando Galarraga. Consider: Charlie Robertson of the Chicago White Sox through the third perfect game of the modern era (fifth altogether). Don Larsen threw the next one in the '56 World Series. Robertson's perfect game came in 1922. There were 34 years in between even two of them. And while that's the biggest gap, the other gaps are all much greater than this recent spate of perfection we've been having:

*Four years from Cy Young's perfect game to to Addie Joss'
*Fourteen years from Joss' to Robertson's
*Thirty-four years from Robertson's to Larsen's
*Eight years from Larsen's to Jim Bunning's
*Just over one year from Bunning's to Sandy Koufax's
*Three years from Koufax's to Catfish Hunter's
*Thirteen years (almost exactly) from Hunter's to Len Barker's
*Three years from Barker's to Mike Witt's
*Four years (again almost exactly) from Witt's to Tom Browning's
*Three years from Browning's to Dennis Martinez's
*Three years (exactly) from Martinez's to Kenny Rogers'
*Four years from Rogers' to David Wells'
*One year from Wells' to David Cone's
*Five years from Cone's to Randy Johnson's
*Five years from Johnson's to Mark Buehrle's

And then look at the time gaps:

*Ten months from Buehrle's to Dallas Braden's
*Twenty freaking days from Braden's to Roy Halladay's
(*Four days from Halladay's to Armando Galarraga's)
*Two years from Halladay's to Philip Humber's
*Just less than two months from Humber's to Cain's

Is there something in the water?

This is the fastest succession with which three no-hitters have happened since 1917. That year, there were no-hitters on May 2nd, 5th, and 6th. There have been plenty of gaps from one no-no to the next faster than either Santana-to-Milwood et al or Millwood et al-to-Cain, but other than 95 years ago, there have never been three bunched this close together before.

Interesting stat there. It could be that "post-steroids" era has left a generation of hitters that emulated the likes of Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire has produced batters that are easier to strike out since they're trying to get a HR at every at bat. Doesn't explain every Perfect Game between Buehrle's Perfect Game and the most recent one, but it could explain at least a couple of them.

Man the Mariners have been on a 5 game losing streak since that No-Hitter. Dare I say that this is part of the 15-20 game losing streak they usually have at some point in the season?


Last time I said that this season, they proved me wrong with being an offensive juggernaught for like a week and a half; so hopefully I'm wrong about that one again
