Felix Hernandez gets a 7/175 extension from the M's, effectively meaning that he amounts to a full third of the team's payroll. But that's what it takes to hang onto an elite player (rumors about the Tigers' attempts to extend Verlander's contract are in the 7/200 range).

Felix Hernandez will be a Mariner through his age-33 season.

This is the best news I have gotten in a very long time =)

Felix Hernandez will be paid like a... a... really well paid guy.

Curt Schilling has pulled out his gas-can and is really going to town with this Bosch-PED story.

In theory - you never know with Mariners' management Then again, that sort of salary will definitely make it very difficult to move him, and would likely bring league review if they tried to ship him for a bundle of prospects.

Verlander is absolutely worth that much money, if anybody truly is.

You could make the argument for King Felix as well, considering he's younger, not to mention the relative value to his team is far greater (the drop from Verlander to Smyly is far less than the drop from Hernandez to whoever the Mariners' first callup from AAA would be).

That's not really how it works. If Felix went out for the season (god forbid), the Mariners #1 starter wouldn't be Hector Noesi. It'd be Hisashi Iwakuma. Everybody that'd be there would take a different role. So instead of Felix-Iwakuma-Ramirez-Beavan-Noesi, it'd be Iwakuma-Ramirez-Beavan-Noesi-goditgetsworsethanthis? .

I see what you mean, but it's not exactly like that.

If you looked at it that way, the difference between King Felix and Iwakuma is still more lopsided than the difference between Verlander and Fister (sorry). (Then again, Iwakuma looks like he might be the real deal going forward.)

Resigning King Felix is the best move the Mariners made this off season by leaps and bounds (yes, it even beats the releasing Chone Figgins move).

The M's get swindled in trades 95 times out of 100. That would almost guarantee the M's would fail if they even attempted to move the face of their franchise. If there is a trade during this contract, it'll be King Felix's call and that will more likely happen during the later part of the deal when he still hasn't had a post season appearance.

The good news is that I'll be seeing excellence in pitching one out of ever 5 games to go with the atrocious batting that I see during every M's game.

And we've been spared Hector Noesi's presence in the Mariners rotation. Oh Hosanna! Joe Saunders is officially a thing.

    ...

Did I really just say 'Oh Hosanna' about a Joe Saunders signing?

No, but he should be fine.
