When the names started their slow trickle yesterday, I had an irrational hope of seeing Giancarlo's name in there. I knew it was not going to happen because he is pre-arb and this is a salary dump. Stanton is just going to have to suck it up. He's probably in Miami until 2017 when he hits free agency.

Also, with J.P. Arencibia, Travis d'Arnaud and A.J. Jimenez in the Jays system, how in the name of Ty Cobb's balls did the Marlins end up taking Jeff Mathis?

Loria is a crook. That's really all there is to it. He bilked the Miami taxpayers of $700 million to construct that godawful stadium, and now they'll be putting a AA team in it.

There've been some calls for Bud Selig to void this trade, under the "best interests of baseball" provision. It's unlikely he actually has the power to do that, since there's no reason the Marlins would be legally prohibited from shooting their competitiveness in the foot like this, but I don't disagree that what Loria has done (again) is tantamount to fraud.

Ah, I see you actually answered your own question. With much the same wording!

Seriously, though, if the Marlins were even going to pretend they cared about being competitive in the near future, they would have asked for d'Arnaud. And the Blue Jays would have happily given him, considering the frickin haul they're getting in return.

Those calls are coming from New York, Boston, Baltimore and Tampa, mainly.

My only question is how did the Marlins decide the Blue Jays were the team so deserving of this gift. Does Alex Anthopoulos have compromising pictures of Loria? He should release them anyway.

Can you believe the Marlins have won two World Series, and have in fact never lost a playoff series?

I think the Jays were able to pull this off for two reasons:

    1. Very strong farm system. They gave up three of their top 10 prospects. Assuming Hech is still a prospect.
    2. Ability to take on the committments. The normal big spenders (Yankees, Dodgers) would go sailing into the Luxury tax bracket. Boston seems to have the room to do it, but who do they have for prospects? Xander Bogaerts, but he is reportedly untouchable.

The Tigers signed Torii Hunter. An improvement over Delmon Young, at any rate, especially defensively.

Not only that, but more physically in shape. Delmon Young looked kind of fat during the postseason.
