Yes, the Mariners dealing Choo was one of the Bill Bavasi specials. But the fact is Choo is only under club control for one more year. The Indians don't look to contend this year, so they're better off getting something for him. The Reds are much more likely to contend this season, even though he'll probably only be a rental for them as well.
In terms of prospects, Bauer is the prize of the trade. He's 21 (22 in January) and has already had Major League experience. He's got ace potential, and his floor is probably still as an effective Major League starter, which don't grow on trees. He's a bit like Danny Hultzen in that regard, only he's two years younger, more advanced, and right-handed.
Supposedly they're also looking into re-signing Raul Ibanez, which wouldn't help with either the "this team is older than dirt" or "glut of left-handed outfielders" issues.

The only thinking there is "he must be cheap to sign now." Apparently the Yankees are hell-bent on getting payroll under the luxury tax threshold this year, we'll see if that happens (not sure if the Dodgers' opening day payroll will be enough to subject them to it, or if we'll actually see every team under that level this year).

Josh Hamilton is very close to becoming an LA Angel.
Josh Hamilton is done at 5-125. The Los Angeles Anaheim Angels of Orange County Southern California better damn well shore up that rotation or they're pissing in the wind.
This seems more like an attempt to take him away from Texas rather than improving their club in areas of need.

Well, they do need a new outfielder seeing as Torii Hunter is now in Detroit... but yeah, on balance that seems to be the case (not to mention Hamilton doesn't play RF - what do the Angels do, have him play CF and move Trout?).

If that's the all the money they have available to spend this winter, I would've gone with Trout, Trumbo, Bourjos and Wells and gone after some of: McCarthy, Dempster (Demopster), Marcum, Jackson and Villanueva. Any of them would be an upgrade on Joe Blanton, Garrett Richards or that belly-itcher that sort of resembles Tommy Hanson.
Edit: Of course, it's only December. If the Angels can send a young controllable outfielder (non-fish name division) with some prospects off to the Mets for Dickey, I could change my tune pretty quick.
Also, Texas needs to add some offense. Soonish.
