List of Pro Guitar songs with *Alternative Tunings*

While as a long time guitar player I have not felt the need to pick up the Squier or Mustang (hell, I can play most RB tunes on my own already - or at least be able to fake it pretty well), I have been considering a Roland VG-99 system.

Now, IIRC, Pro Guitar w/ the MIDI box can be played via a guitar w/ the Roland synth pickup & some sort of mathcing synth/VG device, yes?

VG-99s ability to give you any alternate tuning WITHOUT TOUCHING THE TUNING KEYS could come in handy should one of these alt tuning Pro Guitar tracks pop up while also playing thru an amp.

Obviously this is not a cheap option for RB perfectionists. Just curious if this idea will fly, as I am planning on picking up a VG-99 - and if I were gonna tackle Pro guitar, I'd rather use an instrument of a much better build then the Squier (sorry kids, I'm spoiled when it comes to guitars that are not plastic w/ 5 buttons)

I am doing just that at the moment with a gr 55, see the thread in hardware for details. Works better that the squier unmuted but with the mute in place the squier is more accurate, from what I have seen. Using the vg 99 to change tuning won't work because it then sends out different midi motes to reflect that. The game expects notes for standard tuning regardless of the tuning outside the game.

Beast and the Harlot is Drop D. I think that Killing Loneliness is also Drop D but I'm not sure, but it definitely is a drop step.

You were right that Killing Loneliness was a drop step - I found it was Drop C today.

Deftones' "My Own Summer" is in Drop Db, not Drop D

Killing Loneliness is standard tuning, a dropped tuning is unnecessary.

I've also seen it played in Standard Eb which is pretty much the same just all the chords are moved up a half step.

The only other one I know off the top of my head is:

Linkin Park's "What I've Done" - Drop D (can be played in standard, but more than likely the band plays it in Drop D)

In theory, you could use a midi splitter to feed the midi into a computer, and
have the computer software 'retune' your guitar while you play.

Not sure if anyone has tried that yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

After a quick read through of the thread, I didn't notice anyone mentioning Free Bird. There's a section about a non-standard tuning for at least one of the guitars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Bird#Slide_guitar

Namely, the B string was tuned down to a G. I don't own a pro guitar, but I experimented with my acoustic guitar, following along with a YouTube video of the chart, and IIRC (at least parts of) the solo sounded wrong if played with a standard tuning, but correcting for the tuning down made it okay.

Someone with actual guitar experience could maybe verify.

Are you sure? It doesn't sound right when I play it standard. It sounds better in drop tuning.

Yeah, Killing Loneliness is way off in standard tuning. Definitely Drop C in my opinion.

Also, I found that This Bastard's Life is in D tuning.

Watching the guitar player play it live, it's not the same as the Pro Guitar chart in RB3. The chart in RB3 is in Drop C, unless, the guitar player plays it standard live when the original studio version was in Drop C? It's possible, but watching him play it live it looks like he's using a lot of standard tuning shaped power chords whereas it's mostly dropped chords in Drop C.

idk for sure and apparently nobody else does either because everyone is playing it in a different tuning and in different ways, but if you want to play along with the chart in RB3, it most definitely is in Drop C.

That's what I thought. I've looked at many other tabs and seen people's covers, but unlike a lot of other songs none of them are consistent. A lot of the other songs on RB3 are consistent for the most part with tabs and covers, which is strange for this song. Although I do find it strange that it is in Drop C, but I'm not going to argue with you on that, it probably is. At least for now I won't play it that way, I don't fee like tuning either of my guitars to Drop C, I'm lazy :P
