I don't get this show.

A friend and I actually watched the first three episodes out of mild curiosity. It's not an abysmal show or anything, but the entire time it screamed "average kids show" for me. Well, that's not entirely accurate, as it is slightly better than the average kids show, but I certainly can't understand why it would be of any interest to someone outside its target demographic. I think it actually made me gag a few times, only for its incredible heavy-handedness and unapologetic pulp (and not the entertaining kind of unapologetic pulp, the tremendously depressing kind).

No judgement or offense intended, only genuine confusion. Hell, I dislike this show too, but I'd consider Spongebob a better written children's show, judging only by the first few episodes of each. I've spoken to a few bronies, and the only real answer I've gotten as to why they enjoy the show is something along the lines of "it's a fun show", or "it makes me feel good", or "it makes me feel warm and fuzzy"; never any specific qualities beyond that. Which is all the answer one needs, of course, though I think it's indication that the show really isn't for me, and I should probably just let it be, rather than try to understand the phenomenon. That warmth that apparently exists for others is a burning inferno for me.

I might give that a watch later, when I have time. Still, going into a documentary in an attempt to justify the mass appeal of a show I greatly dislike gives me a rather bad taste from the start.

Looking at the creators track record... guess it may not be a surprise I'm not a fan. I despised the Powerpuff Girls as a kid, and thought Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends got old after a few episodes.

Who knows, though, maybe it becomes more enjoyable after the first three episodes. I doubt it, since I utterly despise the entire tone of it so far, but maybe it will click. I stuck through Wheel of Time, after all, despite being a bit repulsed by the tone of the beginning, and by some of the characters, I'm sure I can handle a season of My Little Pony.

well if you are up to it I would recommend watching a few more episodes... most people agree that the first two episodes are fairly weak compared to the rest of the series...

If it really is just "it makes me happy" or "makes me feel good" then I have to wonder if there aren't some sort of subliminal mind control aspects to this show. Because I see fans online that I can't exactly connect to this show at all. Some of them even here on these very forums.

"The Powerpuff Girls" was Craig McCracken's show. Faust was involved, and it so happens McCracken and Faust are husband and wife, so it's easy to assume, probably correctly, that she had a big hand in it. However, it was not "her show" the way that "My Little Pony" was her show.

Also, part of MLP's charm is that it doesn't try to wink at any particular section of the audience, at least not usually. Yes, there are a few in-jokes if you know where to look for them, but they're not the kind that makes adults laugh while praying their kids don't get it, like they sometimes were in PPG. The reason for that is simple: MLP is not supposed to be a show "you know, for kids (wink wink nudge nudge)," but rather it is a show quite simply for kids. It also happens to be a rare kids show that doesn't pander or dumb things down.

Not sure if serious, but that comes off as just a tad insulting. "I don't get it, and I don't get why you get it, so there must be something making you like it." No, there is nothing "making" me like it. I simply do. It has a cute art style, it has well developed characters and (usually) well developed stories, and it has clear morals that everybody could stand to learn from. Beyond that, why I like it is subjective, and no amount of explaining why I like it will matter if you decide you don't like it. But fortunately, no one in their right mind will hold it against you, either. The herd will still Love and Tolerate you.

Why would anyone into animation ignore such smooth animation, great heart and three dimensional characters in all honesty. These characters are not cardboard or plastic. They have flaws (some of which lead to two characters having mental breakdowns). As for heavy-handedness? Yeah, the show isn't subtle, but it doesn't need to. But it has enough references that makes adults chuckle (given they get the references) for example Diamond Dogs and David Bowie. I've watched all of FIM in it's entirety and a lot of Spongebob and I have to disagree. But I hate the sort of animation and style that show inspired as well as find it unfunny personally. But to eachs own.

The documentary is simply to understand other's perceptions and to be informed.

How can you despise a tone that promotes tolerance, love and acceptance?

Let's not criticize others for not liking the show. As I always say: If someone doesn't like something you do, so what? You still enjoy what you enjoy and they enjoy what they enjoy.
