    The riddles thread

    Post your favorite riddles and brainteasters here, and try to solve others'. I'll start with one of my faves.

    Imagine you're on the top floor of a two-story house. Before you are three light switches, each of which controls a bulb downstairs. How can you determine which switch controls which bulb, when you're only allowed to make one trip downstairs?

    Flip one switch, leave the light on for a while, then flip it back off. Then flip another switch. Go downstairs, see which bulb corresponds to the second switch because it's lit up, then feel the other two bulbs. The one that's warm corresponds to the first switch. So, the one that's neither lit nor warm corresponds to the third switch you never flipped.

    And sadly I can't think of any riddles of my own to post here.

    Before you are three crates, one labeled "APPLES" one labeled "ORANGES" and one labeled "APPLES AND ORANGES" All three labels are incorrectly placed. Taking one fruit from one crate, how can you determine which label correctly belongs on which crate?
