The Elder Scrolls games aren't for everybody, in my experience. It takes a certain player mindset and especially player initiative to enjoy them. If you play them like any other RPG and just complete the main questline and just a couple of sidequests, they don't tend to be much fun. But if you like exploring and/or coming up with a certain character concept and roleplaying it, they're great games to get lost in. Morrowind was my favorite of the bunch, but Oblivion was a lot of fun as well (as was Daggerfall, I've never played Arena, though).

Heh. Nah, just stating my own experiences with the games. If you're going into them with a jRPG or even a Bioware-style rpg mindset, you won't enjoy the games much. To be honest, I've never even finished the main quest of Oblivion because I hated the Daedric portal segments, which were dull, repetitive combat sections in 'hell'. The Elder Scrolls games are all about choosing what kind of game you want to play and playing it, but that does take a little effort and initiative on the player's behalf. You're not really led by the hand after the tutorial.
They're also the only games besides the Thief series in which playing a thief/stealth-type class is incredibly rewarding and lots of fun, whether you're working for the thieves guild or just trying to see what you can get away with on your own. My favorite character to date is still my thief in Morrowind, with whom I absolutely refused to use magic items or spells of any kind, relying purely on skill to get jobs done. Made the game pretty hard at times, but tons of fun as well.
I'm by and large just not a fan of the average RPG because I just have such a hard time seeing them as more than a numbers game. A friend talked me into trying D&D recently, and he won me over by pointing out it wasn't so much a pen-and-paper game of hit points so much as those elements were aids for improvisational collaborative fiction writing. I had kind of an, "Oh, that's why them call them role-playing games" epiphany. So yeah, consider my interests sufficiently piqued.

My younger brother really enjoyed Oblivion, but I could never get into it. Later, we got Fallout 3. Despite the strong resemblance to Oblivion in terms of gameplay mechanics, I played it all the way through once.
