I mean, let's say there's 1,000,000 active RB players. If 1/5 of them are big Pearl Jam fans, and 1/5 of them actually like live tracks, you've cut your potential audience down to 40,000.
Which is why they should be DLC as your not even taking into consideration 1/5 of the 40K fans being from a location where it is unlikely to be released/easy to get a hold of a copy from.

The thing with DLC is success on it is subjective but even if as DLC the Pearl Jam efforts were hit and miss... Ten sold by the bucketload and then some but the second album we got licensed as DLC on the back of such a well recieved DLC effort sold a fraction of the sales compared to Ten.

As you said live tracks could further negate the appeal so a disc release would bomb. If HMX have indeed already licensed the tracks then why not release them... they will already have made all the arrangements and financially pot commited themselves so there is no harm in getting something in return. The majority of the tracks after all fresh efforts from the band not already on the platform but we shall only just have to wait and see for what HMX has planned for these.

Another problem - a lot of those songs are already available for download as studio masters. If a potential customer hasn't yet bought THOSE tracks, you can count on them not buying the new live tracks. And if a customer already bought the studio versions, I can see very little reason for them to want duplicate live versions in their library.

This list of songs seems to only appeal to major hardcore PJ fans or the handful of people who are trying to own all DLC tracks.

Those songs appeal to me, and I belong to neither of these groups. Most of these songs are probably amazing on various instruments, but I still don't see this sell 10k copies unfortunately.

I could definately see a larger-than-usual track pack being made by HMX similar to AC/DC only coming with Pro upgrades for many, if not all songs (this would go a long way in explaining the delay in its release). Full band-centric games aren't working (let alone a live one) and I'm sure HMX knows it. But an idea they haven't tried is a track pack with more songs than the usual 20 (say 30-40) sold at the same price as before and having pro upgrades come with it. If you also make it so that it's exclusive (not available by download like the AC/DC tracks) it would make the track pack a bit more desirable and possibly push more sales. Hell, I'd get it. I would NOT get Pearl Jam (LIVE): Rock Band until it was deep in a bargain bin, and I like the band.
But I believe in this and it's been tested by research: he who [edit] nuns will later join the church.

Every track pack the company have ever released has been using the Rock Band 1 engine... that means an all pro effort nigh on impossible unless they can somehow add the pro upgrades after exporting to rock band 3. I suppose you could export the songs and get a second code which would download a pack with the pro upgrades for the songs but even pro addicted nutters wouldnt be overly enticed with 30-40 songs of a single bands catalogue if they dont like the band surely.

I half think the fact weve got so much Pearl Jam in the game already means its kind of overkill - if Ten for example was not already released as DLC there would be much more appeal... AC/DC was fresh from being a massively requested band that had no DLC in the game on its track pack release. Greenday and The Beatles were both big names not assosiated with being onside and loose with licensing tracks for music games and yet the former bombed comparitively in sales and that was the game of the two which DID export after purchase.

I hope these are good placeholders for actual DLC and not being held "just in case"

All I've got to say is that this sure is interesting. I'm not a PJ fan, but if these songs were released in a giant track pack, or even in a humongous DLC pack, I would pick it up, as long as it was relatively cheap ($20-$30). The majority of the songs seem to have pretty good charts. But I would like the tracks to be exportable to the Wii, if this does in fact turn out to be an upcoming track pack. That's the only thing that's kept me from buying track packs in the past.
So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, good night.

To the best of my knowledge all the track pack exports have not been literal exports but instead a download. So the pro upgrades would come along with the download for use in RB 3 (since the Pack itself would be in RB 1 format) and no second code would be necessary.
And I agree that, no matter how you look at it, there's going to be PJ overkill. I guess I'm thinking that since it seems clear that these songs have been liscenced and work has potentially been already done on it that HMX may be looking at ways to make this material more attractive than usual to recoop something on what they've already invested. I personally think a track pack (or, God forbid, a full blown game) will fail miserably under these conditions unless something unusual is done with it. Hell, it may fail regardless.

Alright, we should just research every song ever released by every band.
