Oh, my right hand is an idiot. Pro keys figured that out for me

I'm sure when playing (what closely approximates) an actual guitar, I'll be able to appreciate that strumming is the job for the dominant hand. My main concern is actually that my right hand will even be smart enough to do the fretting.

Hey, I hope you're learning some drumming techniques, TerryM. I would like to suggest that you start with the regular Drum Lessons instead of the Beatle Beats, though. And take 'em slow at first. If you have any of the other RB games, try those drum lessons, as well. Some of the lessons are the same, and some are different in each game. The Beatle Beats really start from an assumption that you can at least keep a steady beat on the whole kit, while the drum lessons start with a basic L-R-L-R pattern on one pad and develop from there. Good luck, and have fun!
    X-Box Live: gdBOOMOrama
    TB:RB w/ all DLC (73 songs)
    RB3, RB2, RB, LEGO, RB:GD, AC/DC, TP:V2, CLASSIC ROCK, METAL, & COUNTRY TPs + DLC = 1085 songs

Thanks for the advice - it sounds good!

I went back and forth about whether or not to install the cymbal set, and how to begin. I thought about going through the Beatle Beats, but then I couldn't figure out if could be set up in Lefty Mode or not. I assume that it can... If someone reads this and knows that it CAN'T, please let me know.

What I finally decided to do was leave the cymbals off for now and work on completing the story in Easy drum mode. Not just complete it, but collect all photos (5 stars for individual songs and all songs within each chapter challenge). That probably doesn't sound like much of a challenge to most people here, but considering where I started with a total lack of durmming skills, it was a good place for me to start.

It has gone better than I expected! I only have 9 photos left to obtain.

1 photo for 'I Me Mine' (I have 4 stars right now and need to score 5)
6 photos, 2 each for 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)', 'Get Back', and 'The End' (haven't played those songs yet)
1 photo for completing all songs in the Apple Rooftop chapter
1 photo for completing the Apple Rooftop chapter challenge

So I am almost there. It has gotten much easier, and I have found that I enjoy playing drums. Now I can at least sit in on drums for a song or two when a REAL drummer needs a break. :-)

I think my next move will probably be to follow your advice and take some of the various tutorials in this game and others, and then I will restart again in story mode with the goal of collecting all photos in Medium difficulty. I doubt I will ever take the time to master the Expert level, but I would like to think that at some point I will be able to at least complete songs in Hard level, even if I can't 5 star all of them. We will see!

Thanks again for the advice, to you and everyone who contributed. I hope you are still enjoying the game! I am still discovering it over two years after buying it when it was released.
