Twist and shout - The Beatles (originally [?] the Isley Brothers)
I heard it through the grapevine - CCR (originally Marvin Gaye)

More awesome covers...
Emperor - "Gypsy" (Original by Mercyful Fate, who's original version is also awesome)
The Prodigy - "Fuel My Fire" (Original by L7)
Bathory - "Ace Of Spades" (As blasphemous as it may seem, I prefer Bathory's take on the Mortorhead classic)
Pantera - "Electric Funeral" (Even more blasphemous since Black Sabbath did the original but what can I say, for some reason I prefer Pantera's take on it)
Bands I'd love to see as DLC for Rock Band:

Emperor [X]

Perhaps Sacrilegious and Blasphemous at the same time covers it. Most bands that cover Sabbath I either prefer the original or dig both about equally but it's just that one song I prefer the version done by the band that for all accounts are inferior to Sabbath. Call it weird, eccentric, insane, whatever; it is what it is.![]()

For me, it goes...
Fanfare for the Common Man- Emerson, Lake and Palmer (Aaron Copland)
Repent Walpurgis- The Shiver (Procol Harum)
Pretty Woman- Van Halen (Roy Orbison)
All Along the Watchtower- The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Bob Dylan)
House of the Rising Sun- Muse (Bob Dylan, Animals, Sinead O'Connor)
Blinded By The Light- Manfred Mann (Bruce Springsteen)
Back Door Man- The Doors (Willie Dixon)
I Wanna Be Your Man- The Beatles (The Rolling Stones)
Yer Blues- The Dirty Mac (The Beatles)
They're Red Hot- Red Hot Chili Peppers (Robert Johnson)
Crossroads- Cream (Robert Johnson)
Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You- Led Zeppelin (Joan Baez)
The Star-Spangled Banner- Jimi Hendrix
The Man Who Sold The World- Nirvana (David Bowie)
I Heard It Through the Grapevine- CCR (Marvin Gaye)
L.A. Woman- Days of the New (The Doors, this one was almost left off because the original is still amazing)
To name a few.
We need sludgey and droney and stonery metal:
Dirge
Sleep
Bongripper
Sunn O)))
Electric Wizard
Earth
Neurosis
Cult of Luna
Also, anyone that covers "Because the Night" seems to do a better job of it than the Patty Smith Group. It's expected of Bruce Springsteen to do a good job with it since he co-wrote the song with Patty Smith. But when 10,000 Maniacs and Keel outdo you on the song; not to mention Domina Noctis and Sonic Youth; you inadvertently created a song that your own band sucks at.

I just got reminded of a couple...
Powerman 5000 - Good Times Roll (original by The Cars)
Like the harder edge to this rendition.
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (original by Pink Floyd)
Not sure if I prefer it necessarily, but major bonus points for taking a song into a direction it was never intended to go.
