To argue your position you would have to come up with a definition that encompasses all art but that doesn't include anything more than art. I think that this has never been done correctly. The best people have done is to come up with a description of art and this description as always been historical (as opposed to ahistorical, what you are proposing art is)

I think it's pretentious and asinine to think otherwise.

Heard an amateurish cover of Steve Winwood's "Valerie" on the radio. Said version of the song sounded like a piss poor karaoke rendition done by a geek that would be featured in some mindless teen comedy.
Bands I'd love to see as DLC for Rock Band:

    Bathory []
    Bal Sagoth []
    Amorphis []
    Emperor [X]
    Enslaved []

Referring to the 2004 remix version that Eric Prydz did?

Nope. That one was merely someone manipulating the refrain of the original. This one was done by Ra Ra Riot and it was pretty bad, almost in a "So Bad It's Good" way for those fascinated by musical train wrecks.

Oh, dear... Ra Ra Riot covered it? That just sounds awful without having ever heard it.

So I added to my list again. You can pretty much check the last eight entries if you never looked back.
A peek into my RB dreamlist:

Simon and Garfunkel: "A Hazy Shade of Winter"
    Icehouse: "Icehouse"
    The Spinners: "Spaceballs"
