That's pretty close to how I'd do it, although if there's only one MIDI note allocated, it would be all double bass notes or nothing in lower difficulties (unless they add some system to automatically thin them out based on selected difficulty). In that case the most sensible thing to do would be to only display double bass if the drummer was playing Expert difficulty.
